TRACK FOR SLIDING DOORS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,848, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES W. CONOHAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tracks for Sliding Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the illvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

One object of my invention is to provide means for hanging sliding doors which shall substantially overcome the usual vibration attendant upon carrying doors of great weight.

Another object is to provide a track and means for securing it to the wall, which track may be taken down or put up at pleasure without detaching the sustaining-brackets from the wall, and these sustaining-brackets may first be attached to the wall at convenient places and the track removably secured to the brackets afterward.

The details. for accomplishing these and other minor objects are fully set out in the following specification and accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective face view of the track with the strengthening-bar shown in dotted lines and the wheels and hanger with door attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the track, bracket and wheel. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the track. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the track with a differentshaped strengthening-bar.

Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all of the drawings.

In the drawings, A denotes a track constructed of a plate of steel. Running lengthwise of the track, on one side thereof and integral therewith,is a rib or strengthening-bar B,

preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 3,hav ing a narrow web I) and small flanges Z) Z) upon the side opposite from the plate A. This rib B strengthens the track and prevents any lateral or other vibration of the same when the track is set transversely vertical in the sustainingbrackets, thus avoiding the danger of the wheels jumping the track or throwing an undue pressure on one flange of the whee1,whereby said flange is often broken. The sustain in gbrackets O C are secured to the wall by screws cl d through the arms 6 e. The opposite end of the brackets terminates in two fixed jaws or olasps c c, which conform to the shape of the rib B and surround the flanges b b.

YVithin these clamps the track is removably and securely held, the jaw c impinging against the web I) and the jaw 0 against the back of the rib B, which holds the track in a transversely-vertical position.

The manner of setting up, arranging, and operating my invention is as follows: The bracket may first be secured to the wall by the screws (1 (Z through the arms e e, and the rib B of the track A inserted in the clasps c c and slid through to its position, or the brackets may all be placed on the rib B, and the track raised up and the brackets moved along to the position most convenient to fasten them to the wall. The hangers D I), with the door E attached thereto, are then hung on the upper edge of the transversely-vertical track and ready for use.

It will be readily seen that by this mode of constructing the track with a strengtheningbar runninglengthwise thereof upon one side and integral therewith, and setting said track in a transversely-vertical position with the wheels, having the hangers and door attached thereto, running upon the upper edge of the track, there will be no vibration of the track, even though the doors hung thereon be of great weight, and the brackets may be secured t0 the side wall in the most convenient places and the track removably secured to the sustaining-brackets.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-

1. For hanging sliding doors, a vertical plate having a strengthening bar or rib running lengthwise upon one side thereof and integral therewith, said plate being arranged horizontally, wheels carrying hangers, and a door mounted upon the upper edge of said plate and means attached to said rib or strengthening -bar for removably securing said plate to a wall, as and for the purposes shown.

2. For hanging sliding doors, the combination with a vertical track arranged horizontally, adapted to carry wheels, with the hangers and a door attached thereto, upon its upper edge, and having a strengthening bar running lengthwise upon one side of said track and integraltherewith, of sustainingbrackets adapted to grasp the rib or strengthening-bar and thereby support said track in a horizontal position, as and for the purposes shown.

8. For hanging sliding doors, the combination with a vertical track A arranged horizontally, adapted to carry wheels with the hangers, and a door attached thereto upon its upper edge, having a strengthening-bar 13 running lengthwise upon one side of said track but integral therewith, of sustainingbrackets 0 having jaws c 0, adapted to grasp the rib or strengthening-bar and thereby support the track A in a horizontal position, as and for the purposes shown.

4. For hanging sliding doors, the combination with a vertical track A arranged hori-,

zontally, adapted to carry wheels with the hangers, and a door attached thereto upon its upper edge, and having a strengtheningbar B composed of the web I) and flanges Z), Z), running lengthwise upon one side of said track but integral therewith, of sustainingbrackets 0 having jaws c, 0, adapted to surround the flanges b, b, and grasp the web I) and to impinge against the track A, thereby supporting the same in a horizontal position, as and for the purposes shown.

5. For hanging sliding doors, a track set vertically with a T-rib on one side thereof, in combination with two or more brackets each having extending arms for securing the same to the wall and two jaws integral with the arms of the bracket and with each other, forming a groove for receiving the rib of the track, whereby the track is removably held in a vertical position by the pressure of the outer end of the lower jaw against the rear side of the track, and the inner side of the upper jaw against the inner side of the rib, as and for the purposes shown.
