N-PETERS. FHUTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. SANDERSON, OF BRIDGEWATER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,767, dated February 26, 1878; application filed January 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. SANDERSON, of Bridgewater, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Shelves, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on line w m, Fig. 1, of my improved hanging shelves for flower-pots and other articles; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the pronged top part of the hanger.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for flower-pots, books, provisions of all kinds, &c., improved hanging shelves, on which the articles may be placed and supported in convenient and advantageous manner; and the invention consists of slotted hangers with pronged top hooks and adjustable crossshelves, clamped by their brackets to the supporting-hangers.
Referring to the drawings, AA are the vertical hangers or supporting-rods, which are arranged at the upper end with curved or pronged hooks a, for being suspended either from the outer top part of the window-casing or from a cross-bar or any other suitable point of support, according to the objects to be supported thereon.
The hangers A are slotted longitudinally, and a number of adjustable bracket-shelves, B, supported thereon, the brackets being firmly secured to the hangers by means of clamp-screws b.
The shelves may be attached to either side of the hangers, as shown in Fig. 2, and closer together or farther apart, according to the size of the articles supported thereon.
When the hanging shelves are designed for flower-pots, they are hung to the top of the outer window-casing, resting with the lower part against the sill; or they are hung to a cross-bar of the window-casing, with some of the shelves below the sill, or in other convenient manner, as desired.
The advantage of the shelves consists in the convenient exposure of the flowers to the rays of the sun.
If moved inside for books or other articles, the shelves have to be properly supported at the top and bottom.; also when used in the basement or store-room for storing provisions of all kinds. In the latter case the articles are perfectly safe from rats or mice, as the shelves are suspended from a cross-bar, hook, or staple of the beams or walls.
The hanging shelves may thus be applied for a variety of purposes, and used to advantage for flowers and other articles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Hanging shelves constructed of slotted hangers, with top hooks and adjustable bracket-shelves secured to the hangers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT BODIN E SANDERSON.
