J FOULKROD ADJUSTABLE GUNSTOGK.
No. 555,602. Patented Mar. 3, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOSEPH FOULKROD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE GUN-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 555,602, dated March 3, 1896. Application led July 13,1895. Serial No. 555,826. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FoULKRoD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in gun-stocks, and has for its object to provide such a device by which the angle of the barrel or barrels of a gun may be changed relative to the shoulder-section of the stock, in order to adapt said stock to persons of dierent reach; and with this end in view it consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring by numbers to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which` Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a gun and stock so broken away as to show the mechanism by which the change in angle between the stock and barrel-sections is brought about; and Fig. 2, a det-ail broken-away section at the line .r of Fig. 1.
Similar numbers denote like parts in both of the views of the drawings.
1 represents an ordinary breech -loading gun of any desired construction, and 2 the breech-block thereof. Arranged within the frame, back of the hammer mechanism, is a disk 3, journaled upon the shank of the screw 4, and 5 is a worm also journaled within the frame and meshing with the teeth 7, formed upon a portion of the periphery of the disk 3 for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The rear end S of the breech-block is formed in a semicircle from the center of the screw 4, and this circular portion is adapted to fit within a semicircular socket formed in a ferrule 9, which is secured to the inner end of the stock 10. 11 is a rod threaded or otherwise secured radially to the disk 3 and eX- tending rearward through the offset or pistol-grip 12 of the stock and secured therein by a nut 13, run against the washer 14, said nut and washer being countersunk, so as not to offer an obstruction.
From this description it will be seen that the relative position between the stock 10 and the frame of the gun will be determined by the position of the Worm relative to the disk, and as this may be altered by turning the worm in either direction with a screwdriver inserted in the slot 15 in the upper shank of said worm it is obvious that a variety of angles may be had between the stock and the gun-barrels within a limited range. 16 is a cut-away portion in the semicircular end of the frame, so as to permit the swinging movement of the stock without interfering with the rod 11. In practice this is of great advantage, since a person having a gun made in accordance with my improvement may at any time alter the angle between the stock and barrel by simply applying a screwdriver to the worm-shank and revolving the worm sufficiently to throw the stock up or down to the desired degree. In placing guns upon the market this advantage will be apparent in that they may be made with a mean angle between the stock and barrel, and a purchaser selecting a gun which suits him in all other respects may adjust the stock to suit his reach.
I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as these may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In a gun, a barrel-section and a stock pivoted together, a disk rigid with one section and a worm journaled in the other section, adapted to engage with said disk, whereby the angle between said frame and stock may be altered, as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the barrel-section of a gun, a stock pivoted thereto, a disk rigid with said stock, whose center coincides with the pivot upon which the stock turns, and a worm journaled in the frame and adapted to engage with teeth formed upon said disk, whereby the rotation of said worm will alter the angle of said stock, as specified.
3. The herein-described combination of the barrel-section 1, worm 6, journaled therein,
IOO
disk 3, j ournaled upon the screw 4, and having teeth 7, Which engage said Worm,ferru1e 9, provided with a socket adapted to receive the rea-r end of the barrel-section, rod 11, rigidly secured to the disk 3, and the stock 10, through a, portion of which the rod 11 passes and is secured, all arranged, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH FOULKROD.
