THOMAS L. STURTEVANT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN NIPPLED CARTRIDGES FOR BREE CH-LOADING- FIRE-ARMS.
Specificationfirming part of Letters Patent No. 53,552, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. STURTE- VANT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Cartridges or Chargers for Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of one of my improved cartridges or chargers.
It is intended to be inserted in the rear end of the bore of the barrel of a breech-loading It consists of a tube, A, provided with a flanged breech, B, the flange of such breech being represented at a.
The said breech is formed with a bell shaped chamber, I), or one shaped somewhat like the larger end of a trumpet, the same being arranged in it in manner as represen tedin Fig. 3. v A peculiar cap-nipple, O, is screwed into the said breech, and so as to project from the upper surface of the tube A, in manner as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The touch-hole 0, leading through the nipple, is extended into the chamber 1).
Furthermore, the said nipple, is provided with a tongue, (I, which projects from it, and is formed in manner as represented. This tongue isnot only for the purpose of filling the nipple-receiving cavity necessarily made in the barrel of the fire-arm in which the cartridge or charger is to he used, but answers as a means of preventing'the nipple screw-thread from being upset or broken down by the blows of the hammer of the lock of the fire-arm. The tongue at is also advantageous as a means of effecting the removal of the nipple from its screw-hole in the breech B.
The charger or cartridgecase' made as described is intended to be loaded with gunpowder and shot or one or more balls. On introducing it into the rear of the bore of a gun-barrel, the nipple G will enter the recess therein for its reception, and project from the outer surface of the barrel in a manner to enable a percussion-cap, when placed on the said nipple, to be struck by the hammer of the lock in being thrown down or discharged. The diffusion-recess b is to deflect the fire ot' the priming in various directions into the charge of powder.
I do not claim the combination of a percussion-cap nipple with a cartridge or charger; but
lVhat I claim is as follows:
The combination. and arrangement of the tongue (I with the nipple C and the chargingtube A, arranged substantially as specified.
T. L. STURTEVANT.
