T. GUNNING.
, COMBINED WATER HEATER AND PURIFIBR. No. 555,155. Patented Feb. 25, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS GUNNING, OF PITTSlEURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBlNED WATER HEATER AND PURIFIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 555,155, dated February 25, 1896.
Application filed September 18, 1894, Serial No. 523,362. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS GUNNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined ater Heater and Purifier; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved waterpressure heater and purifier; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a side sectional elevation of my improved C0111- bined water heater and purifier, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
To put my invention into practice I provide a shell or casing 1 of a cylindrical form and a suitable size, having a rounded base 2 and fitted at the top with a cap or cover Arranged within this casing 1 is acylindrical chamber 1, having an open base some distance above the bottom of the casing 1, and fitted at the top with a covering 6, which is supported by means of a bolt 7 or other suit able means, whereby an annular space is left, as at S, to permit the steam to enter into the compartment at, as will be hereinafter described. Attached to the outside of this interior shell at are a number of radial projecting studs or arms 5, adapted to receive and collect the sediment from the water entering through the pipes f) and 10. The pipe 9 en tering the top of the device is for the purpose of conducting the water and steam from the exhaust-heater common to all boilers or steam genera-tors, and the pipe 10 is for conducting steam from the boiler to the combined heater and purifier. Entering beneath the inner compartment l is a pipe 1i which projects upwardly and is bent in the form of a gooseneck and is adapted to feed water to the boiler, and is also provided with a valve or cock to regulate and control the flow of water to the same.
Arranged at the bottom of the combined heater and purifier is a conical base 16, having an opening through the same to form a compartment 17 to collect the mud or other sediment from the water and steam entering through the pipes 9 and 10. Connected to the base of the shell 1 is a blow-ofi pipe 18, used for the purpose of cleaning the device, and arranged above the said pipe is a conical or funnel-shaped portion 16, which will permit the sediment to pass through the same and collect within the compartment 17 and be blown off through the discharge-pipe 18 when cleaning the apparatus.
Suitable manholes or openings 19 at the bottom and at the top 20 are provided for the proper working ofthe apparatus.
In operation the water and steam from the exhaust-heater is entered into the apparatus through the pipe 9, and a steam-jet from the boiler is entered through the pipe 10. The steam and water from the pipes 9 and 10 will condense on the top of the dome 6 and are converted into water, and the diameter of the dome 6 being larger than the flange beneath the said condensed water will fall, while the steam not condensed will enter into the chamber i and serve to heat the water therein. The water falling from the flange or periphery of the dome 6 will deposit its impurities upon the rough projecting radial parts 5, and any impurities left in the water will settle upon the conical base 16 and be discharged into the compartment 17. lhe steam and condensed water from the exhaust-heater entering the apparatus through the pipe 9, together with the live steam from the boiler through the pipe 10, will raise the temperature within the heater to about 315, and this temperature will cause any impurities in the water to settle and be deposited into the funnel 16, and from there into the compartment 17, and be blown off through the pipe 18. The projecting arms 5 will gather any sediment deposited upon the same, and the apparatus is cleaned when desired by removing the manhole 20 and introducing a stream of water to wash the several parts of the apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combined water heater and purifier,
comprising the outer chamber having steam and water inlet-pipe, and a jet-pipe entering the same, and the inner chamber with araised top providing steam-ingress passage between it and the upper end of said inner chamber, a boiler water-feed pipe extending through the outer chamber and having its inner gooseneck end extending up into the lower open end of the inner chamber, said inner cham- 1o ber having upon its outer side sediment-c0l hereunto aflix my signature this 31st day of I5 August, A. D. 1894.
THOMAS GUNNING. In presence of- M. E. HARRISON, JAS. J. MOAFEE.
