lle it known that I, 'ILLIAM \VALE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Ti Great Titchfield Street, Oxford Street, London, 1, England, have invented a certain new and Improved use for Containing Sugar or the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain,I To. 3,0l7,bearing date FebruaryQO,1Sf)l,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved case for containing sugar or the like, and has for its object to provide a case adapted for packing in same either lump, castor, or moist sugar or the like in a secure manner for transport or other purposes, which case is readily convertiblefrom a receptacle forcontaining lumpsugar to, say, one for holding fine moist or castor sugar, a further object being to provide means whereby, when the case is employed to contain lump-sugar, the fine particles and dust will be sifted or separated from the large and uniform lumps; and in order that the said invention may be the more readily understood I have shown same upon the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case with the top removed and part of the side cut away for more clearly showing the invention, Fig. 2 being a side view, also partly cut away.

Referring to the drawings, a. is the case composed of four sides a and a bottom 0 and having a false bottom Z) supported upon rests b or otherwise held in position. This false bottom 1) consists of a framework of wood or other suitable material, across which is fastened a sheet of wire-netting of suitable mesh, or a sheet of perforated tin or the like may be employed for the same purpose. This false bottom I) is not fixed to the supports or rests I), but is intended to be lifted out of the case when so desired.

1 also provide, in addition to the foregoing, awooden or other cover 0 to fit over the said perforated false bottom, which cover is de signed to fit closely against the four sides of the case and to be readily removable. The

Fitting inside the case I provide four panels or false sides d, which are fashioned to lie closely against the respective sides or ends of the case. The edges of the said panels or false sides (Z are beveled in a similar manner to those of the false-bottom cover 0, so that when all are slid into their respective places the edges will press closely against one another and form tight joints.

W'hen itis desired to employ the case to contain moist or castor sugar or a similar fine substance, the cover 0 is fitted over the wire or perforated false bottom I) and the panels or false sides (I then arranged in their respect ive places against the inner faces of the sides and ends of the case a, by these means forming a secure receptacle, which with the addition of a suitable lid or cover would constitute a practically air-tight case for containing the fine sugar or the like, preventing the possibility of any of the particles escaping, c1 of the admission of dust or other foreign bodies to the said sugar or the like. In adapting the case to receive loaf or lump sugar or the like the cover 0 and panels or false sides d are dispensed with, and the lumps of sugar or the like put directly upon the false bottom Z), through which the fine particles and dust will be precipitated into the chamber or space 6, beneath which chamber or space is provided a sliding or other door 6, through which the accumulated fine dust or particles of sugar or the like can be removed when desirable.

Suitable handles fare provided at each end of the case for convenience in lifting and transporting same from place to place.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a case for containing sugar, the combination of the outer shell consisting of four sides, a bottom and a lid, with a false bottom, a cover for same and four panels or false sides, substantially as described and illustrated.

2. The combination of the outer case or 9 shell, consisting of four immovable sides, on fixed bottom, and a removable lid or cover with afalse bottom, comprising a frame over which is fixed a sheet of suitably-meshed wire or the like, the whole resting on supports, and having a beveled edge, removable cover, four and for the purpose described and illustrated panels or false sides having their edges bevby the drawings.
