JOURNAL BEARING.
N0. 555,109. Patented Feb. 25, 1896.
NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. MCGARRY, OF W'EST BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
JOURNAL-BEARING,
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No, 555,109, dated February 25, 1896.
Application filed October 5, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Janus P. McGARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in J ournal-Bearings and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improvement in thrust-bearings, and has for its object to provide a bearing consisting of paper or wood pulp fiber having the bearing faced with asbestos, with the object to provide a bearing which will decrease the weight and cost and at the same time increase the efficiency of such bearings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a horizontal central section of a thrust-bearing for a boat which is propelled by steam, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is the paper or wood pulp fiber body of the bearing, and Fig. 3 is the asbestos facing of the same.
A represents the propelling-shaft of a steamboat, shown with its ends broken off, which is provided with bearings or shoulders made rectangular in form, as shown at B B B B, and O is the paper or wood pulp fiber body of the bearing. D is the asbestos facing, andE the outside metal casing, which also has its ends broken off, provided with grooves F F F F, which supports the paper or wood pulp fiber body 0 and secures it in the outside casing E, by means of the shoulders G G G G, formed on the outside curve of the body 0 Serial No. 564,764. (No model.)
and fitting into the said grooves F F F F of the said outer casing E. The body 0 is also provided with grooves H H H H and shoulders I I I I formed alternate with each other in the inner curved side for the purpose of supporting the asbestos lining D, which is made in a zigzag shape, as shown in Fig. 3, with its outer curved side made to conform with the grooves H H H H and the shoulders I I I I of the paper or wood pulp fiber body 0, and the inner curved bearing-face made to conform with the shoulders B B B B of the propelling-shaft A, whereby my invention is illustrated and described as applied to thrustbearing of a boat.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A thrust-bearing comprising a body of paper-pulp fiber 0, provided with grooves H, H, H, H, and shoulders I, I, I, I, on the inner curved side, the asbestos facing D made zigzag in form and fitting the side grooves H, H, H, H, and shoulders I, I, I, I, of the said paper-pulp body 0, and the inner curved bearing-face made to conform with the shoulders B, B, B, B, of the journal part of the propelling-shaft A, in combination with the outer casing E, provided with grooves F, F, F, F, on its inner curved side, all said parts combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. MCGARRY.
