Description
J. A. PREY. BRICK 0R TILE CUTTING MACHINE.
Patented Feb. 18, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. FREY, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE BONNOT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRICK OR TILE C-UTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,816, dated February 18, 1896,
Application filed June 15, 1895.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. FREY, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick or Tile Cutting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brick and tile cutting machines and it consists in providing means whereby the cuttingwires may be quickly removed or replaced without interrupting the operation of the machine.
My invention further consists in providing renewable wearing-plates in the cutter-frame.
With these ends in view my invention relates to certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective illustrating my invention with bearing-off board removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in perspective, of the wire-holder and take-up. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the take-up in normal position and thrown forward to slack the wire cutter.
A denotes the base or supporting frame, and B the traverse or cutting frame, with the bearing-off board removed to show the connection between the lower end of the cuttingwire C and the bar D, connecting the two end frames B. The table E is secured to the end frames B and the back board F to the base A by the irons G.
The frames B are formed substantially as shown, having overshot portions a, secured together by the bar H, that forms the support for the heads G, that serve as a pivotal support for a wire-holder 11, comprising a shank portion 1), one end of which is pivotally secured to the head G, substantially as shown, the other end apertured to receive Serial rattaesi. (No model.)
the rod K, having at one end a hook c and at the other a threaded portion d. At the upper end portion of the holder H is provided a flange d, on which is placed the coiled spring L about the rod K. On the upper end of the spring is placed a flanged cap f and on the threaded portion is turned a thumbscrew g.
In operation to remove or replace a cuttingwire the holder H is thrown forward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to slack the wire, after which it may be removed and another substituted, after which the holder may be turned back to normal position and the thumb-screw turned to adjust the tension of the wire.
At the lower side of the frame B, I have provided a series of rack-teeth, that engage similar teeth of wheels 0 on shaft P. To operate the machine an actuating-lever Q is secured to the shaft P, by which it may be rocked over and back. The wheels 0, engaging the rack-teeth It, will impart a forwardand-back movement to the frame and cuttingwlres.
Having thus fully described the nature and the object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a brick-cutting machine, the combination with a movable frame, of heads, G, secured thereto, wire-holders, H, comprising a shank, the lower end of which is pivoted to the head and the upper end of which is provided with a vertical aperture, and an annular shoulder, d, a rod passed through said aperture and provided with a threaded upper end and a hooked lower end, a flanged cap on said rod, a coil-spring around said rod, said spring being confined between the annular shoulder and the flanged cap, and a tightening-nut, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of June, A. D. 1895.
JAMES A. FREY.
