DEVICE FOR OPENING CANS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,793, dated February 18, 1896.

Application filed October 11, 1895. Serial No. 565,310. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. RECORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oonneaut, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable o thers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cans and similar inclosures having tightly-fitting caps or coversf0r example, such as are described and shown in my reissued patent of November 7, 1893, No. 11,382.

The object of this invention is to provide for conveniently and expeditiously removing such caps or covers. To this end I provide a lever for the cap or cover, the same packing and traveling with the closed and completed can as an attachment thereof. I also provide a fulcrum which may be attached to or formed with the body of the can.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a closed can provided with a lever and fulcrum embodying my invention, the lever being folded for shipment and the position of the parts on opening being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of another form of the can and attachments in which the raised edge of the body of the can forms the fulcrum. Fig. 3 represents a detail view in vertical section, showing the lever ready to lift the cap.

. which consists preferably of a Wire rod passed through the said eye and bent to form two parallel arms, the ends of which join, being turned inward at the outer end, but the shape described is not obligatory.

As shown in Fig. 1, the fulcrum for this lever is a piece of wire F soldered to the outside of the body of the can near its upper end and bent into the form of a broad staple rising above the edge of the can. As shown in Fig. 2, the upper edge A of the can-body A is raised to serve as a fulcrum for the said lever.

I do not deem it necessary or expedient to illustrate or describe other forms of fulcra here, especially as they will form part of the subj ect-matter of additional applications, but wish to be understood as not limiting myself to the constructions above stated and shown, as it is obvious that many other forms, arrangements and constructions of fulcra may be substituted without departing from my invention.

As shown in Fig. 1, the part 0 may constitute a cover for the whole top of the can, or, as shown in Fig. 2, it may constitute a cap for a central opening, the annular part A of the upper end of the can surrounding being integral or rigid with the body of the can, and the said opening being surrounded by a raised neck A The central part of the cap or cover C is depressed, as shown, though this depression is not indispensable, to allow the said lever to be folded down into it, the length and arrangement of the latter part being such as to allow this folding. The lever packs in with the closed can as an attachment thereof, and is operated on its fulcrum in the usual manner to withdraw the cap or cover when the can is to be opened.

As used in the following claims, the words cap and cover have the same meaning, and the word can is meant to include any equivalent inclosure or receptacle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with the metallic body A and removable metallic cover 0 the raised wire fulcrum F fixed to the top of the said body, the pivot-eye D fastened to the said cover and the lever E pivoted in the said eye and arranged to operate against the said fulcrum for Withdrawing the said cover substantially as set forth.
