SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,778, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed September 3, 1895. Serial No. 561,230. (No model.)
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device that will securely hold the sash of a window-frame at any desired height or securely lock it closed, as found desirable; and it consists in a sash holder and fastener constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of a windowframe, and B the sash thereof, both of which may be of the usual construction. To the sash is secured a base-plate C, over which is a suitable cap D, which cap has flanges a at its ends upon a lower plane, and screws I) extend through holes in the base-plate and flanges and into the sash to secure the plate and cap together and to the sash. A fulcrum-pin 0, preferably in the form of a screw, passes through the baseplate and cap and into the'sash, which forms an additional means of securing the plate and cap together and to the sash, as well as a fulcrum for the spring-arms E. This spring is formed of a piece of wire of the desired length bent at or near its middle to form a double coil, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 of. the drawings, the arms E of the spring being of sufficient length to bear against the locking cam-levers F,which are pivotally held between the base-plate O and cap D. The fulcrum-pin cis on a different plane than the two pivots d, which connect the locking camlevers, and nearer the window-frame to give to the spring-arms E increased power upon the cam-levers.
The cam or bearing faces of the levers F are serrated, as shown at e, to engage with the window-frame or with the usual strip or stop thereon, and thus prevent them from slipping.
The strip or stop f of the window-frame may have a roughened or serrated face to correspond with the face of the cam-levers or formed perfectly plain or smooth, as found most desirable. These cam-levers are formed with wide bearing-flanges g, and unlike the levers in ordinary use have shoulders h at their outer extremities, and in these shoulders are formed grooved seats 2 with which engage the ends of the spring-arms E.
To render the cam levers more perfect in their action upon the window-frame in sustaining the sash in a raised position or locking it closed, as the case may be, it is essential that the pressure upon the cam-levers should be on the extreme outer end thereof or the outerextremity of its bearing-surface and not upon the handles or pivotal portion of the levers, or at the center or back of the serrated or cam faces thereof.
By having the bearings of the spring-arms at the outer end or extremity of the cam-face bearing a direct and increased pressure is secured in a direction toward the heel or inner portion of the bearing-surface, thus causing the serrated face of the cam to bear against theframe with greater force and power, the grooved seats 2 forming guides for the ends of the spring-arms and holding them in place.
The cam-levers F have suitable handles G for operating them, and when pressing them together, or in the direction of the arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the cam-faces of the levers will be released from the windowframe, which will admit the sash being raised or lowered, as desired.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
