UNITED STATES ATENT Price.
LEROY D. VRNEIL OF MOUNT HOLLY, VERMONT.
GAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 554,752, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed July 10,1895. Serial No. 555,542. (No model.) u
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEROY D. IVARNER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Holly, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Game, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to a game, toy, or puzzle, and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, amusing, and at the same time ornamental device designed in its manipulation to provide entertainment.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective.
view of a toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the ligures of the drawings.
l designates a base provided with a circular depression or basin 2, having an upwardlyconvened floor 3 and an annular depression et surrounding the conveXed portion. At the center of the depression or basin is an opening 5, adapted to receive a receptacle or bucket 6, which is supported by a lever or handle 7, to which it is connected by a link 8. This lever or handle is fulcrumed at an intermediate point upon a standard 9 rising from the base. Erected over the center of the basin upon pins 10 is a cylindrical curb or well ll, constructed in imitation of masonry, with its lower end elevated sufficiently above the i'ioor of the basin to allow the receptacle or bucket when within the opening 5 to be seen.
In operation the receptacle or bucket is lowered until its upper surface is flush with the surface of the iioor of the basin, and rolling objects or balls l2 which are arranged in the basin are adapted to be introduced into the receptacle or bucket by tilting or inclining the base. l/Vhen an object has been arranged in this manner in the receptacle, the latter is drawn up by operating the lever or handle, and said object is removed when it reaches the top of the curb or well.
In this way the objects are successively received and elevated, and it is obvious that in order to cause the objects to enter the receptacle without throwing others outside of the basin care must be exercised and considerable quickness must be attained.
The wall of the basin is preferably inclined outward toward its top, whereby the danger of throwing a ball or roller out of the basin is increased, and hence the difficulty of accomplishing the object of the toy or puzzle is correspondingly increased.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrilicing any of the advantages of this invention. Y
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A toy having a base provided with a depressed basin the floor of which is convexed with a central opening, a cylindrical curb arranged above the plane of the base with its bore in alignment with said central opening and supported with its lower end out of contact with the base by means of pins or uprights, a lever pivoted upon a standard rising from the base eccentric with the curb, a receptacle approximately equal in diameter with the bore of the curb and the opening in the floor of the basin and adapted to operate vertically in said bore or opening and normally occupy a position with its upper side flush with the surface of the floor of the basin, flexible connections between said receptacle and the inner extremity of the lever whereby the receptacle may be elevated through the bore of the curb by depressing the outer end of the lever, and balls or spherical rollers arranged in the basin, substantially as speciied.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a toy having a base provided with a depressed basin, said basin having a conveXed licor and an outwardly-inclined wall, said wall merging into the convexed floor to form an annular depression4E for the reception of balls or spherical rollers, and an opening formed in the floor of the basin at the apex or crest thereof to receive a ball or spherical roller when the base is manipulated to cause the same to .trav- IOO else the Convexed Hoor, and a plurality of my own I have hereto affixed my signature in balls or spherical rollers arranged in the the presence of two Witnesses.
basin, the outwardly-inclined Wall of the basin being adapted to facilitate the escape LEROY D. VARNER. 5 of the balls from the basin, substantially as lVitnesses:
specified. MARSHALL TARBELL,
FRANK J. vPRADDEX.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
