PRESSED STEEL BND SILL FOR CARS. No. 554,678. Patented Feb. 18, 1896.
WITNESSES: INVEN TOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLEM HACKNEY, OF JOLIET, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRESSED-STEEL END SILL FOR CARS.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,678, dated February 18, 1896. I
Application filed February 13, 1894. Serial No. 500,091. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLEM HACKNEY, of J oliet, Will county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressed-Steel End Sills for Cars, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in. the construction of pressed-steel end sills, to which are connected the longitudinal sills forming the under frame for the support of the car.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of the end sill, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view, also partly broken away, showing the end sill and parts connected therewith. Figs. 3 and at are detail views showing the bent end portions of the sill.
A designates the end sill, which is made of channel-steel with short integral end portions bent at right angles thereto. The side longitudinal sills, B, are similarly constructed, but are of slightly less width, so that their ends fit within the flanges of the end sills. The end and side sills are provided with registering perforations, through which fastening de- Vices, preferably rivets, are secured. Four interior longitudinal sills D, (only two of which are shown, as the half of the end sill is broken away,) similar in construction to the side sills, are connected to the end sills by rivets or other suitable means. The end sill is provided with holes L, through which pass the truss-rods E, and also with holes P for receiving tie-rods E, which extend through and are secured on the outside of the drop dead-block G.
0 indicates the nut and bolt which supports the draft-sill. (Not shown.)
Corner-braces C extend from and are securely fastened to the upper faces of the side sills and the under face of the top flange of the end sill.
It will be evident from the. above descrip tion that I have provided an end sill which is durable, easily constructed and economical, and which, owing to its bent end portions, affords an easy and strong connection with the side sills without the use of angle corner plates. The strength of the connection is increased by the cross-brace, which, being secured to the under side of the top flange of the end sill, does not interfere with the smooth and even attachment of such sill to the end of the car-body, and being secured to the upper surface of the side sill lies in the same horizontal plane as the end of the upper flange of the end sill, and serves as an additional bearing for the side of the car-body to rest upon.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a pressed channelsteel end sill having integral angular end projections and provided with openings for the passage of truss-rods and tie-rods, a side sill having similarly-constructed end portions secured within the flanges and end projections of the end sill, and one or more longitudinal sills provided with angular end portions secured to the end sill, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a flanged steel longitudinal sill having an integral angular end portion, a flanged steel end sill having a similarly-formed end portion and provided with .openings for the passage of truss-rods and tie-rods, and a corner-brace extending between and secured to the upper surface of the flange of one sill and the lower surface of the flange of the other sill, the end of one sill entering the end of the other sill and being supported therein by means of the flanges and end portion of the inclosing sill, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLEM HACKNEY. Witnesses:
W. O. JACQUETTE, JOHN E. PHILLIPS.
