Beit known that I, DANIEL B. SEWARD, of Ilasthampton, in the county of I-Iampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Cloth-covered buttonssuch as are ordinarily made for use on coats, vests, cloaks, and like garments-are open to the objection that they can not be as securely and conveniently applied as could be desired, and also to the more serious objection that the ordinary tufts provided as a means of taking the thread cause the thread to be conspicuously exposed, and the thread when faded lends a far from proper finish to the garment and is more liable to pull out than in the case of buttons having apertures.

The object of my invention is to provide a combination-button in which a solid center of vegetable ivory, bone, or equivalent hard material is so formed as to afford proper support and engagement of the cloth covering, and a clampin g rin g or shell therefor, enabling the button to be cheaply produced and the cloth covering to be neatly and securely applied.

The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter particularly described and dened in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front view of a button embodying my invention, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a central section at right angles to the plane of the button. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the solid center. Fig. 4 is a back view of the button. Fig. 5 is a central sectional view illustrating a slight modification. Fig. 6 is a cross-section taken on the line G 6, Fig. 7, illustrating a further modification; and Fig. 7 is a face view of the modification shown in Fig. 6.

In forming a button in accordance with my invention an improved centerA is provided and is formed of vegetable ivory, bone, or equivalent hard material, suitable apertures a being provided therein for the securingthread B. In order that the cloth covering C of the button may be secured conveniently and properly, thel solid center A is formed with a flange a below the plane of the front a2 of such center, thereby providing a projecting front end or neck a3 and a shoulder a4 outside of and at the base of the neck, the neck in practice preferably projecting slightly above the cloth covering to protect the same, as more clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 hereinafter referred to.

In connection with the cloth covering C and the solid center A a clamping ring or shell D is employed beneath the said covering, which ring or shell has a central opening of sufficiently greater diameter than the neck or projecting part as to tightly receive the innervedge c of the covering between the inner edge of the ring D and the said neck, and such edge c of the clothis turned under the ring or shell and clamped against the shoulder a4 formed by the iiange o', and is also snugly held against the neck or part a3. At the back of the button there is also formed on the solid center a neck or projecting central part a5, and against the back surface of the iiange, cd an apertured disk E is held, the neck a5 projecting through such disk.

The connection of the parts is completed by effecting a clamped en gagemcnt of the disk E with the cloth C and clamping ring or shell D at the periphery of the button, the disk having an upwardly and outwardly iiared outer edge e, over which iits the downwardly and inwardly curved outer edge d of the ring or shell D, as shown, the outer edge of the cloth covering following the bend of its said clamping ring or shell and being inturned and clamped between the edges e and CZ', as at c', as clearly appears in Fig. 2. With this construction the cloth covering will be properly and securely held to the solid center A, the flange a and neck CL3 on the latter affording the proper engagement of the inner edge of the ring and cloth.

In the form shown in Fig. 5 the iian ge A on the solid center A extends sufficiently therefrom to take the cloth and clamping ring or shell, as described, the button at the outer edge beyond the flange being filled with aring F of paper or other material, the button in all other respects being similar to the construction shown in Figs. l to 4.

In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the cen- IOO erin C extending onl a short distance in- Ward from the edge of the button. Having thus described iny invention, I

The button herein described consisting of the center of hard material provided on both sides at its middle with the projecting neck portions and having its outer edge or rim inclined inward from front to rear, a disk having an open center fitting snugly around the rear neck and bent inward surrounding said central opening effecting an edge contact with the rear side of the hard center, the said disk being bent at its upper edge along and against the outer beveled edge of the center, the cloth covering the outer side of said center, the clamping ring or shell arranged beneath the cloth, the inner edge whereof is inturned around the inner edge of the central claim as new and desire to secure by Letters opening in the clamping-shell, the outer edge of the clamping-ring being crimped together and against the outer rim portion of the rear disk, the center forming a solid bearing between the rear disk and front shell from the neck of the center to the outer edge of the button, all substantially as and i'or the purposes set forth.

2. A button substantially as described, consisting of a center comprising an inner section having necks and flange-like portion Whose outer edge is formed cylindrical and the outer rim-like portion of paper or the like having its central opening cylindrical and fitted upon the cylindrical edge of the inner section and made slightly thicker than said cylindrical edge whereby to project beyond the face of the iiange portion of the center, the cloth front and the clamping ring or shell beneath the cloth, the inner edge of the cloth being inturned around the inner edge of the said ring and clamped thereby against the projecting edge of the outer rim-like portion of the center, and the rear disk, the outer edge of the shell and cloth being crimped together and against the outer edge of the disk,

substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
