DETACHABLE COVEFl ORAPPLIANCE FORCOVERING BUTTONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,787, dated March 20, 1894. APPHOMiOH filed August 9, 1893. $eria1 No. 482,715. (No model.) Patented in England March 13, 1893, No. 5,387 i in France July 18, 1893, no. 231,605, and in Belgium July 19, 18(93QN0.105,600.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CUBITT CooKE, gentleman, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 216 Fernhead Road, Pad- (lington, London, England, have invented Improvements in Detachable Covers or Appliances for Covering Buttons, (for which I have obtained patents in Great Britain, dated March 13, 1893, No. 5,387; in France, vdated July 18, 1893, No. 231,605, and in Belgium,- dated July 19, 1893, No. 105,600,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to detachable buttons, or covers or appliances, which can be readily attached to and again detached from the ordinary or other dress-buttons permanently sewed or otherwise permanently affixed to the dress or other garment.
The object of this present invention is to produce an easily-made and inexpensive button-cover, which, while striking in appearance, will be effective in use without liability to come off the dress-button, although easy of attachment and detachment when required.
The body or shell of my button-covers will usually be made of metal (although other suitable material or composition may be employed if desired) and either plain or ornamentalon its outer face, as desired.
My invention consists of a shell or body having an inturned edge or annular flange, an inner washer inserted within the body, an elastic ring resting within the washer, and an additional washer inserted between said inturned edge and the elastic ring. And in order that my invention may be easily understood and readily carried into practice, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings hereunto annexed.
Figure 1 is an edge view of the button cover complete. Fig. 2 is an under side plan' of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional edge View on line 1-1 Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is an edge View of the shell or body of the cover before the edge or serration m are turned over as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is an under side plan of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an edge view and Fig. 7
is a plan of the elastic holding ring by which the cover is held on the button. Figs. 8 to 11 are edge and plan views respectively of two metal washers between which the said elastic ring is mounted and held in the shell (Figs. 4 and 5) as hereinafter explained. Fig. 12 is a local sectional view (on line 1-1 Fig. 2) on an enlarged scale to show clearly the details of construction.
The shell or body a may or may not have the edge m thereof serrated or notched all around, (such as shown in Figs. 2 and 4) so as to facilitate the turning inwards of such edge. A metal washer 0 having a flange or turned up side 10 is first placed within the shell, Figs. 4. and 5. The elastic ring n is then placed within the turned up side 19 of- -this metal washer 0 so as to rest on the lat- .is now turned over and inward upon washer .950 as to force it tightly down into the corner of the washer 0 with the elastic ring n between washers s and 0, and thereby the elastic insertion or ring it is firmly gripped all round its outer edge while its inner edge, (which may advantageously project slightly upward toward the inside of the shell) thereby forms a very effective means of readily placing and holding this cover a on'the dressbutton. Button covers or appliances constructed according to my present invention with india-rubber rings or other suitable elastic insertions on the back thereof, as the means of securing such covers to the dress button, will be found to be capable of being very readily and securely affixed to the dress buttons to which the same are to be applied and again can be readily removed or detached when required,-without liability of the same being knocked off or otherwise coming off accidentally.
By the term dress-button I wish it to be understoodthat 1 mean any button or the like to which detachable covers made according said inturned edge and the elastic ring, subto my present invention are applicable. stantially as set forth.
Having thus described my invention I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters WILLIAM CUBITT COOKE' 5 Patent-- Witnesses:
A detachable button-cover, consisting of a HENRY BIRKBECK,
shell or body having an inturned edge or an- 34 Southampton Buildings, London, Engnular flange, an internal washer within the land. body, an elastic ring resting within the washer, THOMAS LAKE,
10 and an additional washer inserted between 17 Gracechurch Street, London.
