Description

` ATENT Prien.
Nrrnn STATES JOIIN DESMOND, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENBERTII INJEOTOROOMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
AINJECTOR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,415, dated February 11, 1896.
Application led November Il, 1893. Serial No. 490,694. (Model.)
To all .wh/071?, t may concern.' the check-valve, as plainly shown in the Be it known that I, JOHN DESMOND, a citidrawings.
zen of the United States, residing at Detroit, Fromthe chamber I is a discharge-port nz.,
in the county of lWayne and State of Michiwhich port m communicates wit-h the annular 5 gan, have invented certain new and useful passage n around the main easing of the in- 55 Improvements in Injectors, of which the foljeetor connected with the overflow branch E,
lowing is a specification, reference being had as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
therein to the accompanying drawings. A valve o controls the port m from the cham- The invention consists in the peculiar conber I, and this is provided with a winged stem 1o struction, arrangement and combination of pworkinginaguidewayin the easing. Above 6o the parts, and particularly in the arrangethe valve o is an apertured plug q having a ment of the nozzles or jets, and the overflow valve-seat at its upper end upon which is valves and chambers forming simple and eiiiseated the valve r. The plug q is held in cient means for automatically restarting the position by means of the hollow screw-cap s,
I 5 injector and for maintaining the stream under in which is the pressure-chamber t communi- 65 extremes of temperature of the feed-water eating with the delivery-chamber of the inand pressure of steam, all as more fully herejector through the port or passage u. The inafter described. valve r is provided on its under side with a In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical cenwinged stem o extending through the guide- 20 tral longitudinal section through an injector way in the plug q to the top oi' the winged 7o embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a erossstem p of the valve o.
section thereof on line xfa. The parts being thus constructed, their A is the easin g of the injector. operation is as follows: Steam being admitted B is the steam-inlet branch, C the waterinto the steam-inlet branch and water being 2 5 inlet branch, D the discharge er delivery supplied through the water-supply branch of 75 branch, and E the overiiow branch, to each the injector in the usual manner, the steam of which suitable pipe connections may be passing through the jets c d will open the made in the usual manner. valves into the overiiow brauch and create a The body of the injector-casing is provided partial vacuum in the chamber g, lift the 3o with a longitudinal passage containing the water into and deliveritthrough the suction- 8o jets, and at each end this passage is capped tube into the chamber H, from which it will by the caps or plugs c b, permitting access overflow into the chamber I and thence to the interior for the removal and insertion through the port m into the overiiow-passage of the jets. l n, and out through the overflow branch E of 3 5 c is the steam-inlet tube or jet, d the sucthe injector. Such of the water as does not 8 5 tion-tube, c the combining-tube and fthe deenter the delivery-tube will take the same livery-tube, all in suitable relation to each course, and this will continue until the jet is other and secured in partitions in the easing formed through the combining and delivery to divide it into the steam-chamber F, the tubes c f.- As soon as the pressure becomes 4o water-chamber G, the overflow-chamber H reduced in the chamber H the valve h will 9o and overflow exhaust chamber I, and the deseat automatically and the water from the livery-chamber J. chamber H will be drawn into the combining- From the delivery-chamber is a passage K tube. The lifting of the valve 0 correspondconnecting that chamber with the delivery ingly lifts the valve r and opens the pressure- 4 5 branch D of the casing. From the overiiowchamber te the overflow branch. As soon as 95 chamber II is the overflow-discharge passage the jet is established through the tubes the g, which is controlled by the valve h, preferpressure increases in the delivery-chamber, ably a gravity cheek-valve having a suitable. and being communicated to the pressurestem engaging in a guideway t in the plug lc chamber t above the valve r forces the valve 5o secured in an aperture in the casing above 1' to its seat, and this movement will also close roo the valve 0. The chamber I ybeing new closed such Water as may be therein will be drawn out by the jet action and be discharged through the delivery-tube f.
In practice it has been found very difficult to make a valve such as r perfectly tight, and in case that Valve leaks there is usually a continued drip at the overflow. NOW I construct the valve o preferably so that it has a loose fit on its seat, or I may drill a small hole through that valve so that any leak past the valve 7' Will fall upon the valve 0 and in flowing over the edge of said valve be drawn by the suction into the chamber I and be delivered through the delivery tube to the boiler. In this Way all leakage from the Valve r is taken up Without in any way affecting the operation of the machine.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. In an injector, the combination of the casing, partitions therein to form the communicating chambers H I, having an overflow common t0 both7 the combining and delivery tubes having a spill-openin g into the chamber I, the Valve h in the passage between the chambers and the valve 0 for the overiiow located between the chamber I and overflow-passage, substantially as described.
2. In an injector, the combination of the casing, partitions therein to form the chambers H I, the overflow-passage n, discharge D, of the valves h o and o, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the combining and delivery chambers having a spill-passage therefrom, communicating with the chamber I, the valve 0 being constructed to permit fluid above the same to enter the chamber I and the valve o" subject to pressure from the delivery and adapted to close the valve o, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DESMOND. XVitnesses M. B. ODOGHERTY, O. F. BARTHEL.
