MACHINE FOR FORMING FLANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,148, dated February 4, 1896.

To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that LPETER SHELLENBACK, residing at Liberty, in the county of Union and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Flanges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine which will form flanges of elliptical, circular, or other desired shape. In constructing manholes forA boilers or heaters the elliptical form is usually employed. These are difficult to form. The machine herein described will form them accurately and quickly of any desired shape.
The various features of my invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical central section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a face view of one form of reciprocating male die. Fig. 3 is a face view of another form of male die.
A represents the base of the machine; B, the legs; C, the table upon which the work is placed to be flanged.
D represents a driving-pulley 5 E, the spurgear on the axis d of the driving-pulley, and it meshes with the spur-gear F, which is supported upon a crank-shaft suitably j ournaled to the frame of the machine. H represents the crank of said shaft.
I represents the pitman journaled on the crank-pin of crank H at one end and the opposite end to the rock-lever K. This lever is fulcrumed upon the link L. The forward end of said lever is pivoted between the ears M of the bifurcated shaft N, which shaft is reciprocated by the oscillation of the lever K.
Upon shaft N is mounted a reciprocating hammer male die O. P represents a female die. These dies are made of the contour desired for the flange to be formed. Die O is secured to the shaft N by the spline a. The upper end of said shaft is screw-threaded, and the lever-nut R is tapped upon said shaft.
Mode of operation: S represents a boilerhead, which has the exterior ange s of the usual form for a boiler-head. If it is desired to make the elliptical-shaped flange for a manhole, the male and female dies O P are placed in position, the latter being secured within the I-frame of the table and the former secured to the oscillating shaft N. The die O is raised up, so that the lower face of the die O just comes into engagement with the upper edge of the metal. The machine is then started in operation and the shaft N is reciprocated rapidly and forcibly. The hammer of the die O upon the metal forces it downward and into the die l?, and the nut R is turned, forcing the die O downward upon the shaft N as fast as the metal is hammered down. By this means a flange of any desired shape can be quickly formed.
The nut R is removed when the flange is formed, the die O removed from the shaft, and then the boiler-head is free to be moved off.
The use of the spur-gears E Fis simply for the purpose of gearing back the speed of the machine.
Of course where a slow speed driving power is employed the driving power could be mounted on the crank-shaft H.
I claiml. In a machine for forming flanges, the combination with a table adapted to support a metal plate, such as a boiler-head, and having the die P secured in the table-top, of the lever K fulcrumed to a link L suspended from the machine-frame, the vertical shaft N carried by one end of said lever and extended through the die on the table, the die O keyed to the upper portion of said shaft, the levernut R tapped onto the upper end of said shaft, and a crank-shaft having a pitman connection with one end of the lever K, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for forming flanges, the combination with a frame supporting .a table in which is mounted one die, of the powerdriving mechanism mounted on the frame beneath the table and operating a vertical shaft upon the upper end of which is detachably keyed a vertically-adjustable male die, substantially as described.
