P. H. ME'LLQN. METALLIC BED FASTENING.
Patented Feb. 4. 1896 .PHOTOUTHQWASHINGTONI G is a top view of Fig. I partly broken away.
UNITED STATES "PATENT .OFFICE.
PETER H. MELLON, OF ST. IJOUIS, MISSOURI.
METALLIC BED KFAS'I'ENING.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent N 0. 554,132, dated February 4, 1896. Application fileaoctobei 28, 1895. $erial No. 567,181. (No model.)
the posts thereof which will keep the head and foot pieces rigidly in square with the bedbottom. I dispense with the castings commonly used on the ends of the side rails, which are provided with a taper-pin fitting into a taper-slot on castings secured to the posts. I accomplish this object by means of the device shown in the drawings, in which- Figure I illustrates in perspective sections of the bed-post with the end rail and my rightangle side rail attached. Fig. II illustrates in perspective the same as shown in Fig. I, excepting that my right-angle side rail is reversed in order to support bedslats. Fig. III
Fig. IV is a cross-section taken along the line IV IV of Fig. II. FigV is a cross-section taken along the line V V of Fig. I.
1 is the bed-post. 2 is a casting secured to the said bed-post adapted to support the side and end rails.
3 is a block, approximately cubical in shape, cast or welded to the part 2.
4 is the side rail, made of right-angle iron.
5 is a bolt adapted to pass through a hole in the block 3 and secure the side rail 4 thereto.
6 and 7 are holes in the side rail 4. When the bolt 5 secures the side rail 4 through the hole 6 the angle of said side rail is as shown in Fig. II, and adapted to support the bed slats or springs. When the bolt 5 secures the said side rail through the hole 7 it is in the position shown in Fig. I.
8 are the end rails.
- 9 is a bed-slat, (shown by broken lines,) and 10 is a thumb-screw which may be used to secure the bolt 5 instead of the ordinary nut.
My device provides a fastening which avoids the accidental breakage so common when the ordinarytaper pin and socket are used. It also provides a fastening which permits the reversing of the right-angle side rails of the bed when desired.
The part 2 and the cubical piece 3 are preferably cast in one piece. The bolt 5 may also be cast in the piece 3.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bed-fastening comprising a posthaving a laterally-extending approximately-cubical block, and a right-angle side rail, and means whereby the side rail is secured to the top and outer side of the cubical block or to the outer side and bottom thereof; substantially as described.
2. A bed-fastening comprising a post having a laterally-extending approximately-cubical block provided with a transverse bolt and a right-angle side rail having holes located in both flanges at the end thereof, and adapted to be secured by the bolt to the top and outer side of the block or to the outer side and to the bottom thereof; substantially as described.
