SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,627, dated January 28, 1896.
Application filed August 15, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. ROOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners which can be applied without boring or mortisin g the sash to apply the fastener, while the movable locking-plate is so fashioned and arranged that it operates against the window-jamb by the turning of a thumb-screw.
To accomplish this obj ect my invention consists, essentially, in a sash-fastener composed of a stationary and movable plate interposed between the sash and the facing-strip of the window-frame, the movable plate having a flange at one end, which is turned inward to lie between the edge of the sash and the window-j amb when the thumb-screw is turned in such a manner as to bind against the jamb to hold the sash. The other end of the said movable plate is secured to a sliding nut by means of 'a rivet, which allows the movable plate to oscillate and thus form a perfect lock for the sash, whether the thumb-screw is turned up to its full length or not. The said sliding nut, to which the said movable plate is secured by means of the said rivet, is secured to the stationary plate by means of a portion of the edges of the stationary plate being turned over the edges of the sliding nut, thereby forming bearings in which the nut slides by means of the thumb-screw, which is held in place by turning up-a portion of the end of the stationary plate and slotting the same to form a bearing for the thumb-screw, which has a groove turned in its unthreaded portion to iit the slot in the turned-up portion of the stationary plate,'and the threaded portion of the thumb-screw has a left-hand thread out thereon, so when the thumb-screw is turned to the right it projects the sliding nut, to which is riveted the mov able plate,which in turn is pressed against the window-jamb and forms a lock for the sash.

desired to leave the fastener on the sash, but the fastener can be carried in the pocket and placed on the sash, and it will lock the sash equally as well as if it were secured to the sash by means of screws or nails.
V The invention also consists in other features of construction and combination or arrangement of' parts, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a portion of a sash and a portion of a window-jamb with the fastener secured to the sash, showing the sash locked. 1 designates the thumb screw, having a groove therein and a left-hand thread cut thereon.
2 designates the stationary plate,which may or may not be secured to the sash in locking the same.
3 designates the sliding plate, which is pressed against the jamb by means of the sliding nut and thumb-screw, backed by the stationary plate.
4 designates the rivet which loosely secures the sliding plate to the sliding nut, thereby allowing the sliding` plate to oscillate.
5 designates the turned-up portions of the main or stationary plate forming the channel or bearings, through which slides the slidingnut, which is secured to the sliding plate by the rivet and operated by the thumb-screw.
6 designates thev projection of the stationary plate, through which portion is holes into which screws or nails may be inserted to secure the plate to the sash.
7 designates the sliding nut', into which the thumb-screw works and which slides in the channel formed by the turned-up portions of the stationary plate, and which is secured to sliding or locking-plate lOO The fastenerl comprises a main or stationary plate 2 having arms, the ends of which are turned laterally at their extremities to form ilanges which lie against the edge of the sash and form a bearing for the fastener, by which the sliding plate can be pressed against the jamb by means of the thuinb-screwwhen the fastener is not rigidly secured to the sash by means of screws or nails. This main or stationary plate 2 is designed to be loosely or rigidly secured to the sash without boring er mortising or otherwise cutting the latter, and in ease it is desired to secure the plate to the sash rigidly the plate is provided with holes G for the passage of ordinary Wood-screws or nails.
The main or stationary plate 2 is provided With turned portions 5, which form a channel and bearing for the sliding nut 7, which is operated by means of the thumb-screw l. The thun'ib-serew l has a groove turned there in and iits in the slotted portion of the stationary plate to give it a bearing so it can project the sliding nut, Wh ich carries the slidin g plate 3 and presses same against the window-j amb, thereby locking the sash.
Having thus described by invention, what l claim is- In a sash-fastener, the combination of the main plate with forked ends bent at right angles, the slot in the inner end of the main plate in which the groove of the thumb nut is placed to prevent lateral motion, the thumb screw, sliding nut, and pivoted sliding plate With outer end bent at right angles, substantially as described.
