FENCE-WIRETSTRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,779, dated January 7, 1896. Application filed May 31, 1895. Serial No. 551,196. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUGH ROBINSON, of EXeter, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Fenceire Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fence-wire stretcher which is simple and durable in construction, readily applied on a fence-post, and arranged to be conveniently and easily manipulated, to properly stretch the wire from post to post. a
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the-same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the wire-clamp, parts being in section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4.- i of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The improved fence-wire stretcher is provided with a bar A carrying at one end a chain B, adapted to be passed around a fence-post O, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, so
as to securely attach the said bar A to the.
fence-post at the height to which the wire is to be stretched.
The outer end of the bar A carries a pivot D for a hand-lever E, carrying at or near its middle a wire-clamping'device F, adapted to engage and hold the wire G to be stretched from post to post. provided with a link H, adapted to hook onto one of a series of teeth A formed in the back of the bar A, the latter being also provided with a guide-rod I extending in front of the teeth, to permit of sliding the link H along the back of the bar without actually detaching the link. The clamping device F is preferably of the construction shown in detail in Figs. 3 and at, the said device being provided with a plate F, pivoted at F to the hand-lever E, and on the top of this. plate F The hand-lever E is also is arranged a lever F fulcrumed at F, and provided with a corrugated cam-face F over which the wire is passed to press the latter in contact with the fixed straight surface F on the plate F. Now it will be seen that when the hand-lever F is swung open then the wire can be conveniently passed between the surfaces and F, and then the lever 'F' is moved in the direction of the arrowa,
so as to. cause the cam-surface F to securely clamp the wire upon the straight surface F. (See Fig. 2.) I By this arrangement the wire is securelyiheld in position on the hand-lever E. A similar clamping device J may be arranged on one of the links of the chain B, so that the wire may be temporarily clamped in place by the said clamping device J whenever it is necessary to take a second hold of the wire G by the clamping device F.
The device is used as follows: The bar A is attached to the post 0 by the chain B, as shown in the drawings, and the hand-lever E is opened by swinging the hand-lever outward, away from the bar A, as indicated in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The wire is now passed upon the clamping device F and secured thereto by the operator manipulating the lever F as previously described, after which the operator swings the lever E inward to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby a pull is exerted on the wire G, so as to stretch the same. At the same time the link I-I moves inward on the toothed back of the bar A, to move upon an innermost tooth, to prevent an outward swinging of the lever E by the strain of the wire G on the clamp F. If the wire is sufficiently stretched, the operator may now tack it to the post 0; but if not sufficiently stretched he takes the outward end and fastens it to the clamp J and then releases the wire at the clamp F to repeat the above-described operation by a second stretching of the wire.
It will be seen that this device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, readily attached to the post at the desired height for the Wire and easily manipulated by a single person.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fence wire stretcher comprising a main bar adapted to be attached at one end to a fence post and provided with teeth on one side thereof, a hand lever fulcruined at one end on the free end of the said bar and extending in the direction of its fixed end, a clamping device held on the said hand lever to engage and clamp the wire to be stretched, and a link connected with the hand lever between the clamping device and the fulcrum of said lever and adapted to engage the toothed bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fence wire stretcher, comprising a bar having a series of teeth formed in one side thereof, a chain for connect-in one end of the toothed bar to a fence post a hand lever fulcruined on the outer end of the said bar, a clamping device held on the said hand lever to engage and clamp the wire to be stretched, a link connected with the hand lever and adapted to engage the teeth of the said bar, and a guide for the link, substantially as shown and described.
3. A fence wire stretcher, comprising a main bar adapted to be attached to a fence post, a hand lever fulcruined on the said bar, a clamping device held on the said hand lever, a link connected with the hand lever and adjustably connected with the said bar, and
a guide for the said link, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A fence wire stretcher, comprising a toothed bar adapted to be fastened to a fence post, a guide rod extending over the teeth of the said bar, a hand lever fulcrnnied 011 the outer end of the said bar, a link held on the said hand lever, and adapted to engage the teeth of the said bar, and a clamping device held on the said hand lever, and adapted to engage and clamp the wire to be stretched, substantially as shown and described.
5. A fence wire stretcher, comprising a toothed bar, a .chain for connecting one end of the said toothed bar to a fence post, a hand lever fulcruined on the outer end of the said ban-a clamping device held on the said hand lever to engage and clamp the wire to be stretched, a second clamping device held on the said chain to temporarily clamp the wire, a guide extending in front of the teeth of the bar, and a link held on the hand lever and adapted to engage the teeth of the bar, sub stantially as shown and described.
