FRANK DREIV IVINKLEY, OF MADISON, IVISCONSIN.
O l L C U P SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,737, dated January "i, 1896.
Application filed August 10, 1895. Serial No. 558,901. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FRANKDREW WINKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison,in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is an oil-cup for bicycles and the like, and is an improvement over the cup shown in Letters Patent granted to me March l5, 1892, No. 470,734..
My invention includes a body which is made tubular to hold the oil, and a cap covering the body and provided with a cut-away portion adapted to register with or to cover the opening for the oil in the body, the cover and body being held together by means of a spring, which while preventing the parts from becoming detached also operates to place a sufficient amount of friction on the cap to prevent too free movement on the body, but at the same time the detachment of the partsmay be accomplished when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a sectional view of the cup; Fig. 2, an elevation, and Fig. 3 a detail of the parts detached and separated.
In the drawings, A represents the body or post, which is screw-threaded at its lower end for attachment to the part to be lubricated, having a notch at its upper end for use of a screwdriver, and this is provided with an oilopening a, leading to the interior of the body. It is desirable to cover this opening ce, so as to prevent dust or like material from passing to the interior, and for this purpose I provide a cap l?, which fits over the body. This cap has a flange which extends down below the oil-opening except at one point where the cap is cut away, and when this cutaway portion registers with the oil-opening the oil may be injected into the opening. Vhen turned out of register, the flange of the cap completely covers and protects this opening.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a simple form of connection between the body and the cap; and to this end I form a groove in the periphery of the upper end of the body, as shown at e', and sink a hole centrally of this groove above the oil-opening a. The cap is provided with a like groove f, which when in position with the body registers with the groove e. In order to hold the parts together, I take a piece of spring metal g, curved into a circular form and having one end bent at right angles, as shown at h. This end I insert in the hole with the curved portion extending to one side, and then place the cap over the body with its cut-away portion in line with the hole containing the bent end of the wire spring. The cap is then turned, and this lays the wire in the groove in the body,
and as soon as the end of the wire disappears in the groove the cap is pressed down to its full extent, with the result that the spring engages with its groove and thus holds the parts together. By this arrangement one end of the spring is attached to the cap, and the resiliency of the free portion thereof will cause it to press against the wall of the groove in the cap,and thereby prevent the accidental rotation of the same.
4What I claim is- In combination, an oil cup provided with a groove, a cover therefor having an opening therein registering with a lling opening in the cup, and being provided with a groove registering with the groove in the cup, and a spring secured at one end to the cup fitting said grooves, the resiliency of the spring keeping its free portion pressed against the wall of the groove in the cover, whereby a frictional restraint is exerted by said spring to prevent the turning of said cap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK DREW VINKLEY.
