UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS G. HOJER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-TIP CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,853, dated February .17, 1877; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS G. Home, of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella Rib-Cup, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of the cup for receiving the rib ends and holding them up to the stalk, fitted to screw onto and off the ribs, whereby the action is more certain and reliable, and the cup less liable to disengage the ribs, than when it slides on with a spring.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an umbrella with a rib-cup arranged according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the rib-cup and side elevation of a section of the stalk.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the rib-cup, which I propose to construct with a screw-threaded neck or shank, B, and fit it on a screw-threaded sleeve or tube,
v 0, attached to the stalk D, so as to screw the cup along over the umbrella-ribs E, as clearly shown in the drawing.
In practice, the cup and the sleeve 0 will probably be constructed of sheet metal, and
the screw-threads will be pressed so as to be light and cheap. The shank B will, in practice, have an unthreaded vportion extending over the threads of sleeve 0, so as to conceal them from view.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the externally-screwthreaded ferrule O and the internally-screwthreaded tip-retainer A B, with the umbrellahandle D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
