MOP-HEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,649, dated January 7, 1896.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT V. V. SUTH- ERLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berryton, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mop-heads.

The objects of my improvements are to provide in a mop-head a construction that may be cheaply formed and easily put together, a slightly-yielding clamping device, and means whereby the marring of furniture and the base-boards of a room, by the mop-head, may be avoided.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

My mop-head is constructed, preferably, of malleable-iron castings.

In the drawings, 2 indicates the main frame, having a socket 3 for the reception of a handle, and a pair of short parallel arms 4 4. Secured to the lower ends of arms 4 4 is a flat bar 5 provided near each end with mortises adapted to receive the ends of arms 4, and provided also, on its upper surface, with projecting points or teeth 6 for engaging the mop. Bar 5 forms a fixed jaw for holding the mop, and it is extended laterally beyond the arms 4 and turned upward, outside of the arms, to form protecting lugs 7 7, to which are secured on their outer surfaces, by cementing or otherwise, a pair of semispherical knobs 8 8 of rubber or like yielding material. Mounted upon the arms 4, so as to slide vertically thereon, is a flatbar 9 provided on its under surface with recesses 10 adapted to register with the teeth G on the fixed jaw, and provided on its upper surface with a pair of parallelribs l1 l1 which form a guide for the clamping-cam 12. Bar 9 forms a movable j aw,between which and the fixed jaw the mop is clamped. .I aw 9 is actuated by means of a lever bent to forman open annular cam l2 and an operating-handle 173. Said lever is pivoted at one end to the side of the main frame 2, so as to swing in a vertical plane thereon, and the frame is offset, as at 14, so as to bring the working edge of the cam opposite the center of the movable jaw and between the ribs 1l formed thereon.

In operation, the actuating-lever being turned to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, the mop is inserted between the jaws 5 and 9 and is clamped in position by throwing the lever downward to the position indicated by full lines. The cam l2 being of the open form yields slightly to the pressure, and therefore holds the mop with a more persistent grip than if made solid.

In using the mop the knobs 8 effectually protect the arms 4 and the ends of the niovable j aw and prevent the marring of furniture or the base-board of the room thereby.

I claim as my invention- In a mop-head, the combination of the main frame having a socket adapted to receive a handle and having a pair of parallel arms forming guides for amovable jaw, the movable jaw mounted on said arms, the fixed jaw secured to the ends of said arms and projecting laterally beyond them, the protecting lugs formed on saidjaw, the knobs of yielding material secured to the outer faces of said lugs, and the actuating-lever bent to form an open annular cam which is pivoted at one end to the main-frame and arranged to engage the movable jaw, all substantially as set forth.
