SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,368, dated December 31, 1895.

Beit known that I, WILLIAM HAVEEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide an ironing-board especially adapted for ironing shirts, shirt-waists, and the full sleeves thereof, and other articles of similar character; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my improved ironing-board.

Referring to the parts by letters, A represents a board which forms the base of the device, and B the board around which the garment is drawn and upon which it is intended that it shall be ironed. It is desirable that the upper board shall be wider at one end than at the other, substantially as shown, and I prefer to make both boards of the same shape and size.

C represents a curved leg which connects said boards and holds them in substantially parallel relation with each other. The middle part of this leg lies about midway between and approximately parallel with the two boards. One end of the leg is curved upward and terminates in a plate c', which is secured to the under side of the board B, and the other end of the leg is curved downward and terminates in a plate which is secured to the board A.

I am aware) that ironing-boards have been formed from two substantially parallel boards and a standard or leg which connects them together; but so far as I am aware the legs have been substantially straight and vertical. advantage. When such a standard is placed at one end, as it has been, the end of the top board near which said standard is placed is practically useless. It is desirable that the ends of the top board shall be of dierent widths, substantially as shown, and that either end shall be capable of being used by pulling the garment over it, which as before suggested is impossible when the connecting standard is at one end. The greater the part of the top board which can be brought into use, when the garment is drawn on from either end, the greater is the practical utility of the device.

W'ith my construction above described there is formed a loop c3 open to the left between the top board and the part c of the leg, and the end of this loop is a greater or less distance to the right of the middle of the upper board. A similar loop c4, but open to the right, is formed between the lower board and the part c of the leg, and the end of this loop is a greater or less distance to the left of the middle of the top board. When a garment is drawn over the top board from the left, the part of the garment below the board enters loop c3, and more than half of the top board may be used. When the garment is drawn over the top board from the right, the part of the garment below the board enters the loop c4, and more than half of the board may be used.

The peculiar construction of the connecting-leg renders the board more useful than any other board heretofore used.

Having described my invention, I claim- 'lhe combination of a base board, and an approximately parallel top board, with a connecting leg having its middle portion substantially midway between and parallel with said boards, and having its ends curved respectively upward and downward, and connected with said boards, for the purpose specified.
