BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,068, dated December 24, 1895.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILL'IAM IFI. MAGALrs, a citizen of the United States,residing at Clifton Forge, Alleghany county, Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following lspecification to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as Will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple,economical, and efficient means for detachably securing the side rails to the headboard and foot-board of a bed. In such fas-M tenin gs it is very desirable to have simplicity and strength in order to render the joints vermin-proof and free from liability to breakage.
My invention consists of aheaded fasteningplate adapted to pass entirely thro'ugh a suitable slot or opening in the posts of the headboard and foot-board, and a cam or eccentric shaft having suitable thimble-bearings in the side rails and engaging in an opening-formed in the fastening-plate and adapted to be rotated to clamp the parts together.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will rst describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward particularly point out the novelty in the annexed claim.
In said drawings, Figure I is a detail side elevation of a portion of a side rail and post secured together by means of my improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional vieW taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l. Figs. 3,4, and 5 are enlarged detail perspective views of the detached parts of the fastening device.
I is the side rail of the bed-frame formed With a longitudinal mortise-opening 2 extending in from one end, and a transverse circular opening 2TL extending in from the inner face of the rail and communicating With the mortise-opening 2.
3 is the post of the head-board or foot-board formed with a slot 4 extending through it and corresponding With and forming a continuation of the mortise-opening 2 of the side rail I. The rail I is preferably set into a mortise 3 l into the post 3.
5 is my improved fastening-plate provided with an enlarged iianged head 6 formed in tegral With its outer end and a journal opening 7 adjacent to its inner end., The fastening-plate 5 is preferably formed broad and thin, and the mortise-opening 2 and slot 4 are of sufcient size to freely admit the plate. The plate is inserted from the rear of the post 3 through slot L into the mortise-opening 2 until the opening 7 cornes opposite the transverse circular opening formed in the side rail.
3 is a circular bearing cavity preferably lined With a metal inner bearing-thimble and in line with the opening in the side rail I and on the opposite side of the mortise-opening 2.
I0 is a cam or eccentric formed integral With the hub portions Il and 12 and adapted to be fitted into the side openings in the rail 1 with the inner hub Il j ournaled in the bearingthimble 2n and the outei1 hub l2 journaled in the removable outer bearing thimble I3, Which is fitted over the hub I2 and completely iills the circular opening in the side rail. The bearing-thimble I3 is formed preferably with an annular flange.
14 is a squared head formed integral with the cam IO and adapted to receive the Wrench 15 by which the cam is rotated for locking the parts together.
The operation of my device is very simple, it being necessary to simply insert the fastening-plate 5 through the post 3 and into the mortise-opening 2, When the cam IO is slipped in place into engagement with the journal opening 7 and the thimble 13 slipped over the hub I2. The Wrench l5 is then applied and the cam rot-ated, the eifect being to draw the plate 5 longitudinally and secure the rail 1 and post 3 securely together.
By having the fastening-plate passed entirely through the post 3 the fastening device is made much stronger. The thimble I3 closes up all opening in the bearing parts, While the head G closes up any opening in the slot 4, so that the fastening will be found to be verminproof.
Having thus fully described my invention, the following is What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
rlhe combination of the post 3 having a v'ertical plain rail-mortise 3fL and a vertical slot 4 extending through the post from the mortise, the rail l inserted in the vertical mortise and having a longitudinal mortise opening 2 in the end thereof and a circular transverse cavity lOO 8 extending aoross the longitudinal inortise opening and providing a Cani-shaft bearing and the Corner fastening comprising a oonoealed vertical plain plate 5 extendin g entirely through the slot in the post and into the 1ongitudinal slot of the rail having a circular opening 7 at its inner end providing a earnbearing and a transverse flanged head 6 at its outer end seating against the outside of the post, the Cain-shaft having an inner hub 11, a Io Cain l0, an outer hub l2 and a head 14, substantially as shown and described.
