ATOMIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,938, dated December 24, 1895.
Application filed August 5 1895 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. TRAVIS, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Atoinizers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to hose-nozzles, and particularly to a spraying-nozzle.
The object of my invention is to provide a nozzle which will emit a perfectly even and complete cone of spray, and one in which the body or thickness of the spray may be regulated at will and in accordance with the pressure of water at hand.
A further object of my invention is to provide a safety-valve whereby bursting of the hose from extreme pressures may be avoided.
To this end my invention consists in the combination, with the nozzle proper, of a conical button or stopper for the end thereof, said button being capable of longitudinal movement, and a spring to act upon said button and against which the pressure of the water must operate to force thebutton slightly away from the end of the nozzle. n
My invention consists further in particular means for holding` the button or cone and for adjusting the tension of the spring against the same.

The opening in the inner end of the cone is of greater size than the rod, so that the cone will not bind upon the rod, and between the inner shoulder of the part 4 and the end of the nut I provide a small spring 9, the tension of which is adjustable by means of the thumbnut 6. The pressure of water within the nozzle will act to force the cone outwardly away from its seat upon the end of the nozzle, and the water will j et or spray in a thin and widelyexpanded cone of spray. The distance to which the water is thrown and the iineness of the spray may be regulated by the pressure of the spring 9. The device is entirely automatic in its action, and a constant and even spray may be maintained regardless of the pressure of water. Further, the device acts as a complete safety-valve upon the hose and all liability of the hose bursting is avoided.
A further advantage of my device lies in the ease'of adjustment, and further in the small compass of the spray attachment or device, and in the general cheapness of the nozzle in manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the nozzle, of a central `stein or rod, with a cone or button movable thereon and adapted to normally close the end of the nozzle, an adjustable part upon the outer end of said'rod, and a spring interposed between said part and said cone or button, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the nozzle, of a central stem or rod having a threaded outer end, with a cone or button movable thereon and adapted to normally close the end of the nozzle, an adjustable nut upon the outer end of said rod, and a spring interposed between said nut and said cone or button, substantially as described.
3. A nozzle, having a conical opening at its outer end, the cone to close said opening, the central stem whereon said cone is freely movable, said stein having a threaded outer end,

nut on the end of said rod, and a spring arranged between said nut and said plug, whereby the plug may be regulated according to the pressure of the water in the nozzle, substantially as described.
