GUM-BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,783, dated December 24, 1895.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, GEORGE MUsGRovE, surveyor, residing at 24 Endymion Road, Brixton Hill, Surrey, England, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Gum-Bottle, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates to an improved gumbottle, and is designed to provide a simple and eiiicient arrangement for raising the brush out of the gum when not in use, while allowing perfect freedom for dipping it into the gum at any time desired. For this purposel I provide the gum-bottle with a funnelshaped cap having a circular Opening at its lower part, and a depressible thimble or ferrule, in which the brush is supported, fitting over this lower part and normally held up to it by a spiral spring. This spring is suiiciently iieXible to yield readily When it is required to depress the brush into the gum, but serves on the brush being released to lift it out of the gum.

ln order that the invention may be readily understood I will proceed to describe the same by aid of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a vertical central section of my improved gum-bottle. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, the cap being removed. Fig. 3 shows the cap separate from the bottle, and Fig. I is a part side elevation showing the shape of the neck of the bottle.

a is the gum-bottle proper, whose neck is or may be provided with ornamental projections and collars, as shown in Fig. 4L, and has at its upper part a projecting edge Ct. b is the funnel-shaped cap, which has a rim b adapted to it upon the edge a and provided with clips b2, for whose passage corresponding recesses a2 are formed in the edge a. By this construction after the cap has been placed in position a slight turn will cause the clips to engage under the edge a after the manner of a bayonet-joint, thereby holding the cap securely on the bottle.

c is the depressible thimble or ferrule which supports the brush d, andeis the spring which surrounds the funnel-shaped cap and serves to keep this thilnble or ferrule normally in its raised position, so that the brush is out of the gum when not in use, as shown in Fig. l. The depressed position of the thimble or ferrule c is shown in Eig. 3, this being approximately the position it assumes when the brush is immersed in the gum prior to using the same.

rIhe improved gum-bottle is used in the same manner as an ordinary gum-bottle, the cap being readily disengaged by a slight turn, permitting the withdrawal of the brush from the bottle.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination in a gum bottle of a funnel shaped cap, a depressible thimble or ferrule supporting the brush and tting over the lower part of such funnel shaped cap, and a spiral spring surrounding the funnel shaped cap and secured thereto and to the thimble or ferrule so as to keep the latter normally in its raised positionsubstantially as described.

2. The combination in a gum bottle of a bottle proper having a recessed upper edge, a funnel shaped cap provided with clips to engage said edge and a depressible thimble or ferrule supporting the brush and fitting over the lower part of the funnel shaped cap normally held in its raised position by a spring substantially as described.

3. The combination of the gum bottle proper a provided with the projecting edge ci' recessed at a2 the funnel shaped cap b provided with the rim b' and clips b2, the depressible thimble or ferrule c supporting the brush and fitting over the lower part of the funnel shaped cap and the spring e for retaining the said thimble or ferrule normally in its raised position, substantially as described.
