J. FRAMPTON. MUSTAOHB GUARD.
No. 535,691. Patented Mar. 12, 1895v JOSEPH FBAMPTO N,
Farce.
OF WILLIS, TEXAS.
MUSTACHE GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersIPatent No. 535,691, dated March 12, 1895. Application filed September 20, 1894. Serial No. 523,605. A (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FRAMPTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Willis, in the county of Montgomery and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mustacheguard or shield, showing the same as applied to an ordinary tumbler, ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through the middle of the tumbler, with the guard in position therein. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard or shield, removed from the tumbler. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line 00-50 in Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to detachable mustac'he-guards, or protectors, adapted for use with drinking-cups or goblets, tumblers, and other drinking-vessels; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the device which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, I have shown my improved mustache guard or shield, B, as applied to an ordinary glass tumbler, shown at A. The guard proper con sists of a concavo-convex plate of circular form, having a central aperture B, and of such diameter that, when applied to the cup or tumbler on which it is to be used, a narrow annular opening, I), will be left all around the plate, between its periphery and the rim of the cup or tumbler.
Fastened to the apertured middle part of the shield 13, on its underside, is a depending tube 0, provided with a series of apertures c c, and open at its lower end, 0, for the insertion of a plug D, fastened and supported centrally upon a weighted base-plate D, adapted to fit into and rest upon the bottom of the cup or tumbler,.as the case may be. The rim of the concavo-convex shield or guard-plate B is provided with a suitable I number of clips or spring-clamps E E, by
means of which it may be clamped, by springpressure, upon the rim of the tumbler A.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my improved detachable mustache-guard will readily be understood. After it has been inserted into a cup or tumbler, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, it is held in place by the weighted base-plate D and its plug D, with or without the springclips. In using the drinking-vessel, the liquid contained therein finds its outlet through the narrow annular space 6,-- the concavo-convex guard E effectu ally preventing the mustache and upper lip of the person drinking from becoming soiled by dipping into the liquid. When the cup or tumbler has been emptied, it may be replenished without removing the guard by filling it through the central aperture B and perforated tube 0.
This device, it will be observed, is exceed ingly simple and inexpenisvein construction, and can be made in various sizes to adapt it for use on drinking-vessels of different kinds. It may be made of glass, wood, celluloid, hard rubber, porcelain, metal, or any other suitable material; and if made of base metal, should be silvered or nickel-plated to prevent oxidation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improved article, the heroin described mustache guard or shield, comprising the concave convex, centrally apertured plate 13, having outwardly extending clips E adapted to engage over the edge of a tumbler and provided with a central depending perforated filling tube 0, in combination with a central plug D, fitting in the lower open end of said tube and the weighted base plate D adapted to rest on the bottom of a cup or tumbler, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH FRAMPTQN.
