Be it known that we, FRANK H. BUNDY and LUELLA S. Prcnnrfr, citizens of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain nenr and useful Improvements in Spring-Mattresses; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention consists of a spring mattress or bed bottom formed as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a plan view, partly broken away, of a spring-inattress embodying ourinvention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on line a; 4r, Fig. l, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, on line y y, Fig. l.

A designates the outer frame of the inattress, consisting of. the end pieces B, of Wood or other suitable material, and the side pieces C, preferably of tubular or pipe iron, said side pieces having threaded ends, which pass through openings in the said end pieces, and are secured therein by the nuts D.

E designates dat strips or slats of elastic inateria-l, arranged lengthwise of the mattress and connected at the ends With the coil-springs F, which are secured to the eyes Gr on the ends B of the frame. Rigidly secured to and dependin g from the strips E, at a short distance from and on bot-h sides ot' the centers thereof, are the blocks H, to which are attached the loops or eyes J. The elastic rods or Wires K freely pass through said loops J, and are at one end connected with the eyes L, which are secured to the ends B, substantially in line, with and below the eyes G. The inner ends of each pair of said rods K are connected by a coilspring M, and the inner ends of adjacent rods are connected by a single link N, or a double link, as l?, may be employed. The stripsE are also connected with each other by means of the detachable links Q. The eyes G and L are formed With screw attachments or stems, so that the same maybe adj ustably connected with said ends B, and thereby regulate the tension of the coil-springs F and M.

It will be seen that the mattress is practically composed o sections, each formed of a strip or slat with its spring-coils, its depending block, and rods with intermediate connecting coil and end fastenings, and that each section may operate to a certain extent independently of the other sections. The rods K with the intermediate spring connection serve to aid in sustaining or supporting the Weight on a strip E, and also, when the Weight is removed from the said strip, to restore the same to its normal position.

The links N, P, and O serve to connect and steady the sections in a portion of their movements.

As described., the construction, though forming a light mattress, is yet strong and serviceable, and owing to its few and simple parts is easlly repaired when injured. By forming it in sections, as described, it is adapted fora heavy and a light Weight on the different sides, as the side occupied by each Will be operated Without materially aitecting the other side.

lt will be apparent that by having the side pieces C provided with threaded ends the frame A can be adjusted in length so as to aid in the adjustment of the sections.

Having thus described our invention, what We desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is-- l. A spring mattress formed of sections, each section consisting of a strip of elastic material having coil springs With securing eyes at its ends and provided with depending blocks having loops or eyes thereon, and rods passing through the loops on said blocks and having securingeyes at their outer ends, said securing eyes of the rods being separate from and in vertical line with the securing eyes of the coil springs of the said strips, and an intermediate connecting spring at their inner ends; said parts being combined.

2. In a spring mattress, a frame formed of end and side pieces, strips of elastic material, eyes secured to said end pieces, coil springs IOO connecting said strips and eyes, blocks rigidly connected with and depending from said strips having loops or eyes thereon, rods passing through said loops and eonneeted at their outer ends to eyes on said end pieces, said latter eyes being in line with and below the eyes to which the coil springs of the strip are connected, intermediate coil springs eonneoting said rods, links connecting said strips and links secured to and Connecting the inner ends of adj aeent rods, said parts being combined substantially as described.

8. A spring mattress consisting of a frame adjustable in length, sections each composed of a ilat elastic strip having its ends connected by eoil springs to screws adjustable in the ends of said frame, depending blocks rigidly seycured to said strips on each side of and near FRANK ll.
