MEANS FOR LUBRICATING BEARINGS OF STONE-BREAKERS.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,310, dated December l0, 1895.

To @ZZ whom it mag/,concern- Be it known that I, PHILETUS VARREN GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means forLubrieating Bearings of Stone-Breakers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of rock and stone breakers in which is employed a vertical gyrating shaft carrying a crusher-head and journaled at its lower end in an eccentric-bearing, but it has more particularly to do with the peculiar construetion and combination of parts whereby perfect lubrication of the said lower bearing is secured while the stone-breaker is in operation and at rest, without undue waste of the lubricating-fluid.
In the accompanying drawing :forming part of this specification the figure represents a central vertical section of the devices enibodying my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the gyrating shaft, which is reduced at its lower end to form a journal portion a, and this portion is loosely mounted in the eccentric-bearing B, and supported by an adjusting-step D, and a movable step-block d. This step-block is loosely seated in a recess d formed in the supporting-chamber A', which chamber is formed integral with the bed-plate A2. The adjusting-step D passes through and engages a screw-threaded passage d2, and abuts against the lower end of the step-block CZ. 'lhus upon turning the step D by means of its squared end d4, the step-block d, and consequently the shaft A, can be raised or lowered as desired, the said step being locked in the desired position by means of the locking-nut CZE. The supporting-chamber is recessed as at a', and in this recess is placed the eccentric-bearing B carrying the shaft A, but this bearing B does not fill the whole of the said recess a", but leaves at the base an unoccupied portion a2 which forms an oil-chamber. This chamber a2 has communication with the oil supply by means of oilpassages c c. The eccentric-bearing is provided with a supporting-flange b, which rests upon a bearing-ring or washer ZJ', which in turn is mounted on the supporting-chamber A. The bevel gear-wheel C is provided with a horizontal flange c', which fits upon and is rigidly secured to flange h of the eccentricbearing by means of the bolts c2. The gearwheel C is also provided with an inwardlyconverging flange c3, which forms an oil chamber or cup c4, and with obliquely-arranged radial passages c5 extending outward from the bottom corners of said cup to supply oil to the oil-passages e c in the supportingchamber A', the latter being provided with a circular flange e which extends upward and has its upper edge turned inward above the discharge ends of the passages c5, thus forming a guard to prevent the oil, issuing from the said passages, from flying over the top of said flange by reason of the centrifugal force imparted by the rotary movement of the bevel-gear. This flange also forms an enlarged oil-chamber about the outer edge of the flange of the eccentric and its bearing so that said flange is fully lubricated by the oil contained therein. By the peculiar construction of the inwardly-converging flange c8 any oil thrown against it is directed downward and directly into the inlets of the passages c, as the points at which said passages enter said oil-chamber are located at the angle formed by side wall and bottom of said chamber which is at the greatest distance from the center of rotation of the chamber. The rotary motion of the oil-chamber, with the consequent centrifugal force imparted to the oil in the chamber c, is the primary and principal canse of the feed of the oil to the passages c c. The oil in the chamber c4, when the machine is in motion, is thrown, by said centrifugal force, against the flange and the consequence would be that the oil would not be properly fed to the passages as ordinarily constructed and arranged and when gravity alone is relied upon to do the work; but with my construction and arrangement of the radial passages c5, the feed of the oil from said chamber c4, through said passages, to the supply-passages c c is made IOO positive, andk in fact has sufficient forcel to `cause a frapid feed of# all oil suppliedto the chamber 'c'while it is positively"directed downward.
It is not necessary in some applications of my invention that the passages c extend to ythe bottom of the shaft-and eccentric-bean! rotarymotionof 'the said 'chamber is forced directly'through kpassages 'c5 against fiange e;
