VETERINARY OBSTETRICAL FORCEPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,301, dated December 10, 1895. Application filed April 23, 1895. Serial No. 546,849. (No model.)
To tu whom t may conccrnf Be it known that I, CHARLES BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiskilwa, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Obstetrienl Forceps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to obstetrical forceps, and more particularly to that class of forceps designed for facilitating the delivery of animals, more especially pigs.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and inexpensive forceps, by means of which the animals may bedelivered of their young, and which shall be of such construction as to insure the delivery with the least possible danger.
W'ith these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing I have represented my forceps in perspective.
1 and 2 denote two handlebars pivoted together at their middle, as shown at 3. The outer end of the upper bar 1 is formed in open spoon shape, as shown at 4, and is substantially the same as the forceps now in use. The outer end of the handle-bar 2 is curved downward and then upward and is provided with aknob or ball 5 on its end, which is directly under the opening of the spoon.
In operation, the open spooneshaped end of the bar l is passed over the head of the pig and engages the base of the skull, and the ball or knob on the bar 2 will lit under the j aw in the fork thereof, thus insuring a good hold on the pig 'under the jaw and at the back of the head and allowing the pig to be delivered with the least possible danger. Should it be diffi cult or impossible to grasp the pig with the spoon and ball, I construct the' inner ends of the handle-bars as shown in the drawing, wherein one bar is provided with a Wide downwardly-curved face 6, While the inner end 7 of the other bar is plain. IVith this form the portion 6 is placed under the lower jaw of the pig, With which it conforms7 While the end of the other bar is passed through the mouth of the pig, thereby enabling the lower jaw to be iirmly clamped by the forceps. After the pig has been drawn forward enough to enable the other ends of the forceps to be used the jaw is released and the head of the pig is now grasped in the manner hereinbefore set forth and will be less liable to be injured.
The forceps are exceedingly simple and are Well adapted to the purpose for which they are designed.
