AiR-COMPRESSOR FOR WATER-ELEVATORS.

Be it known that I, GOVERNOR D. WARREN, of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain nenr and useful Improvements in Air-Compressors for Vater-Elevators; and l do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in air-compressors for Water-elevators, and it consists in the novel mechanism for compressing air, by which Water is designed to be raised from a cistern, or other reservoir, which 'will be fully described hereinafter and especially referred to in the claims.
My invention is especially directed to the provision of a cheap, simple and effective mechanism for elevating and circulating Water, as through a house, and which requires a minimum amount of attention from the operator.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, shown partly in section, of my elevating mechanism. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vert-ical sectional View of the air-compressing mechanism. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the pipes leading to the cistern-chamber.
A designates the cistern, well or other Water-container having supported therein, almost completely submerged, the chamber B provided with inlet-valves B at its loWer end. C is a pipe extended from the upper end of said chamber to the top of the cistern orwell, and Within this pipe is the smaller pipe D, the lower end of Which reaches to the lower portion of chamber B.
E is a fitting mounted upon the upper end of pipe C, and through this fitting the said pipe is connected to an air-compressor presently to be described, While the pipe D having an independent passage through the said fitting is connected to the circulating or discharge pipe F. A relief-pipe G is also connected to the said fitting through which the air escapes from chamberB and pipe D, when so desired. A pipe ll having a valve H connects pipe D With the vertel; of cone l, which 'latter has the peripheral flange l, n-hereby it is supported upon and riveted to the upper end of cylinder J.
K is an air reservoir, telescoping cylinder J, and which is provided with the air-inlet valve K. The loWer edge of this reservoir is flared outward as shown, and secured thereto is the gasket L formed of rubber or other similar material, and which is beveled upon its upper and inner edge, as shown at L', so as to bear iatly against the cylinder J, and thus effectually seal the face between the reservoir and said cylinder from the passage of air. The upper end of the reservoir is provided With a suitable Weight M, and is adapted to be elevated by rope O, passing upward around pulley P, secured in the upper end of the tripod frame Q, and from thence descending to the drum and Winding mechanism R, suitably mounted upon the said tripod-frame.
In operation the reservoir is elevated by the abovedescribed mechanism with the valve H' closed, so as to prevent a suction of Water from the chamber B, and which When being elevated is filled with air through the valve K. lith the relief-valve F open the Water from the cistern iills into the chamber B through the valves B', to the level of the fluid in the cistern, so that the same automatically fills when unaffected by an airpressure. The relief-valve F is now closed and the valve H opened with the Winding or elevating rope of reservoir K released, thus throwing the Weight of the same upon the air which it and the cone I contain, thus forcing the same downward through pipe H, into the upper end of the chamber B, through pipe D, Where it exerts its pressure upon the surface of the Water therein contained. The Water finds relief from this pressure through the pipe D, through which it escapes from the said chamber and by this means the same is elevated and circulated in the desired manner. The discharge-pipe is provided with a valve R, as shown, so that the flow may be controlled at Will. The air-pressure Will continue until the reservoir has completed its downward movement when of course the saine should be Wound up or raised in order to continue the elevation of the water.

By arranging the pipe C within pipe D, I reduce the amount of fitting necessary to make the connection with chamber B, and at the same time secure a most compact arrangement.
My improved elevator is well adapted for circulating water through houses or for simply raising water from a cistern or well as by its use pumping is obviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An improved air compressor for water elevators comprising a cylinder having a discharge, a vertically movable air reservoir telescoping the said cylinder, an upwardly eX- tending gasket of rubber or other suitable material secured to the lower end of said reservoir with its upper end resting against the outer circumference of the cylinder.
2. An improved air compressor for water elevators comprising a cylinder having a discharge, a vertically movable air reservoir telescoping the said cylinder7 and a gasket of rubber or other suitable material secured to the lower end of said reservoir andhavingits upper end beveled so as to bear flatly against the said cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved air compressor for water elevators comprising a cylinder, a discharge therefor, a vertically movable air reservoir telescoping the said cylinder, the lower end of the said reservoir being flared outward, a gasket of rubber or other suitable material secured to the said flared portion, and having its upper and inner edge beveled so as to bear iiatly against the cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
