IMPROVED FRUIT-JAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,128, dated May 29,.1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSHUA It. LUPTON and NATHAN E. LUPTON, of Stafford, Monroe county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Sealing Fruit- Oans; and we do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1. is a vertical central section of a fruit-can with my improved stopper attached. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of my improved stopper.

Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved stopper, by means of which fruitcans can be sealed air-tight in such a way that the fruit can be kept sound and sweet for any length of time, and the stopper can be removed when required without difficulty and without injuring the stopper; and it consists of a fruitcan stopper formed by combining an india-rubber or equivalent lining or surface with a wooden or metallic cap,'as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary fruit-can, which may be made of tin, glass, or earthenware, as may be most'convenient. B is the stopper, which consists of a wooden or metallic cap, I), a little largerin diameter than the diameter of the mouth of the can. This cap I) should have a shallow cavity hollowed out on its under side, which will receive the mouth of the can. To the under side of the stopper is attached, by nails, glue, or in any other convenient manner, an india-rubber surface or lining, 11 as shown in Fig. 2.
In applying the stopper to a can the can is first filled with hot fruit, the stopper is then placed upon its mouth, and a weight placed upon it. in the rubber lining of the stopper, and as the fruit in the can coolsthe pressure of the atmosphere will hold the stopper to its place, securely sealing the can. When the fruit is cold the weight may be removed and the can v of a strong knife should be inserted between the rubber lining b and themouth of the can A. Then a slight effort will admit the air, and allow the stopper to be removed without injury to the stopper, which can then be used for seal ing another can.
Among the advantages of our invention it may be mentioned that the operator can always tell whether the can is sealed or not, for if the scaling is not perfect the stopper can belifted from the can; but when the can is sealed by forcing a stopper into the mouth of the can it is impossible to tell whether the can is sealed or only corked.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- An improved fruit-can stopper, formed by combining an india-rubber or equit alent surface or lining with a wooden or metallic cap, constructed and applied substantially as herein described, and. for the purpose set forth.
