A. E. RHOADES. METALLIC BQX 0R HOLDER.
.No. 550,531. Patented 1555525, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO E. RHOADES, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOPEDALE MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
METALLIC BOX OR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 550,531, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed June 1, 1895. Serial No. 551,338. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. RHOADES, of Hopedale, county of WVorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Metallic Boxes or Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a cheap, strong, and serviceable metal box or holder composed in greater part of shaped or struck-up sheet metal and strengthened by, preferably, cast-metal ends. In the use of textile machinery more particularly trough-like boxes or holders are employed to hold a quantity of bobbins, &c., in readiness for the attendant as they may be needed, and if constructed of wood the hard usage soon wears the boxes out, while metallic boxes are heavy, clumsy, and expensive.
By my invention to be hereinafter described I have overcome these objections by combinenlarged detail sectional view taken on the line .1: 90, Fig. 2, looking down; and Fig. 1 is a detail in, elevation and section, of one of the retaining-clips.
I have herein shown the box or holder as composed of a body portion A, of sheet metal, and ends B, of, preferably, cast metal. The sheet metal of the body is pressed or struck up by dies in any suitable manner to form a front a, bottom a, back a and partial top 4 leaving an opening in the front extending from one to the other end, the upper edges of the front a and top a being preferably bent or turned over to form beads or ribs a and a, respectively, giving a finish to the edges and obviating sharpness.
In cross-section the bodyA is herein shown as five-sided; but any other desired shape may be employed, according to circumstances.
The ends B are preferably cast, for the sake of cheapness and convenience, corresponding in shape to the cross-section of the body A, and are shown as provided along their edges with a rib or flange b on the outer face.
As shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends are provided with a series of inturned ears or lugs 19 b b on their inner faces and at the edges corresponding to the front, back, and top of the body, said ears orlugs being slotted in the plane of the adjacent portion of the body to receive the ends thereof.
I have shown the front a and back a of the body as embraced at each end by two such ears 5 and 5 respectively, and the top a by one ear 5 at each end; but it will be obvious that the number of cars may be varied and their location changed as desired or necessary without departing from my invention. Each ear is recessed from its outer end inwardly, as at 15, Figs. 3 and 1, to form a socket therein at each side of the portion of the body embraced, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 by full and dotted lines, and when the body and ends have been assembled, as described, retainingplugs d d, of some suitable soft metal-as, for instance, leadare driven into and fill the sockets, thereby firmly wedging therein theparts of the body embraced by the cars. In order to obtain the best results, the sockets in each ear or lug are located in different vertical planes, so that the plugs or wedges d d will press the adjacent portions of sheet metal in opposite directions against the rigid metal of the ears. Any bend or crimp thus made in the sheet metal causes the closer engagement and grip of the ears of the ends B upon the body A and a strong, stiff, yet light and cheap, box or holder is produced.
While I have shown my invention as embodied in a box or holder for bobbins and the like, my invention is not restricted thereto nor to any particular shape or dimensions.
By omitting the recesses 15 the edges of the sheet metal can be inserted in the slots of the ears and then hammered over or upset in the depressed portions at the outer ends of the ears, and then the said depression can be filled with putty or other suitable composition, as at f, Figs. 1 and 4:, and the box painted.
I claim 1. A metallic box composed of a sheet metal body, and rigid metallic ends provided with inturned socketed lugs to embrace the ends of the body, and retaining plugs inserted in the sockets of the lugs at opposite sides of the adjacent portion of the body, substantially as described.
2. Ametallic box composed of a sheet metal body, and rigid metallic ends provided with intnrned socketed lugs to embrace the ends of the body, and retaining plugs inserted in the with a series of separated inturned slotted lugs to embrace the ends of the body, said lugs being recessed inward from their outer ends, whereby access may be had to the edges of the body therein throngh and from the outer ends of the lugs to securethe edges of the body to the rigid ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
