A. GAUDEFROY. ENVELOPE.
N0.550,499. Patented Nov; 6,1895.
LayJeJ." jweivhr ANDREW BEGRANAM.PHO'IOUMQWASHINGTDN 0.:-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANGE GAUDEFROY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,499, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed April 12, 1895. Serial No. 545,539. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANGE GAUDEFROY, a citizen of France, residing in the city of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in envelopes, of folded flexible fabric, so made that they cannot be op ened without detection.
The following specification and drawings accompanying will fully describe the invention, in which- Figure 1 shows the shape of the paper as cut to form an envelope. Fig. 2 shows the complete envelope with end open ready for use, the opposite end being secured by a single look. Fig. 3 shows an envelope made with two looks at one end and closed by spearhead tongue at the other. Fig. 4 shows the same as Fig. 2 with threads attached to locking-points, by which they can be spread after inserting. Fig. 5 shows the same as Fig. 4 with threads broken off in the envelope after spreading the points.
Like letters refer to like parts.
This invention is an envelope formed by the side flaps folding over each other and secured by one or more tongues at bottom of envelopes, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the tongue passing through slits in both side flaps, and being spread, as shown, makes a secure envelope ready for use, the open end being afterward closed by spear -shaped tongue passing through slits in both side flaps, the side flaps a a to overlap each other and end flaps b b overlapping the side flaps, with perforations or slots 0 in the side flaps and tongues 01 and d on end flaps to enter and lock in the slots 0. The looking-tongues d and cl are made with a portion broader than the width of slots and preferably so that they can be folded, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and so that the points e e, of spear-head shaped tongue, will hook under the edges of slits, as shown at e e in Fig. 3, or the points of spearhead can be spread by threads attached thereto and passed through slit and edges of envelope, as shown at f f in Fig. 4, and after closing and spreading the points the threads can be broken off, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having described my invention, I desire to c1aim An envelope the closing flap and body of which are respectively provided with a slot and tongue the tongue being capable of being folded, and when unfolded being wider than the slot and threads attached to the tongue'for the purpose of unfolding the same, substantially as described.
A. GAU'DEFROY. Witnesses 2 A. DULAGUIER, DENERNEY.
