Be it known that I, ELIJAH HAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in certain novel and valuable improvements in fences; and it consists more particularly in a new an d improved fence-post, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. v

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view illustraing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the post, showing the relative position of the fence-wires and the means for securing the fence-wires to the post. Fig. 3 is a group, showing the headed bolt, its fastening-nut, and the tension-nut for the end of the supporting and securing wire for the line or fence wires.

In the drawings, l indicates the body of the post, which is preferably a netallic tubular post of galvanized iron.

2 2 indicate two square-headed bolts through the heads of which are formed the transverse apertures 8. These bolts are secured horizontally through the post, one at its upper end and the other at its lower end, as shown, and are held in place securely by tighteningnuts 4 on their threaded rear ends. These bolts are thus arranged with their square heads on the front side of the post, past which the wires of the fence run.

5 indicates a stout wire of such size that its ends will pass through the vertically-arranged apertures of the bolt-heads, and this wire is curved once around a mandrel of a little larger diameter than the fence-wires, forming the loops 6 at the several points where the fenced and these ends of the tension-wire are threaded, and a burr or nut 7 screws on the ends of the wire above and below, respectively, the apertured bol-t-heads. lVVhen the posts have been secured in position and before the tension-nuts 7 have been screwed up tight, the fence-wires 8 are passed through the receiving-loops 6, when the tensionnuts 7 are screwed tight on the top and bottom of the bolt-heads, thus stretching the spring-wire 5 and closing the loops 6 tight around the respective fencewires,securely and firmly bin ding the fence-wires and holding all the parts in the most substantial manner.

The lower end of the tubular post is cast with the radial vertical webs or anchor-flanges 9, which are cast together at their inner edge, and stand radially, as shown, while a ilat iron anchor-plate l0 is riveted vor otherwise suitably secured centrally to the bottom of the vertical ianges 9, extending six inches on each side of the flanges, which latter occupy a circle of six inches in diameter. This horizontal anchor-plate is arranged directly across at right angles to the line of the fence.

When the post is set in the ground, the flanges 9 being two feet long, which places the bottom anchor-plate 10 two feet under ground, the dirt well packed in between the radial flanges 9 will hold the post iirmly and securely, the wires support the post in the direction in which the fence runs, while the bottom anchor-plate lO braces it to each side across the line of the fence. A wire l2 is preferably secured around the post and tension-wire 5 about midway of the post to hold the wire 5 against the post.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
