UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE A. STAUFFER, or MoKEEsroRT, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED SNOW-PLOW, EXCAVATOR, AND SWEEPER.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,357, dated November 26, 1895.
Applicatic: file. April 23, 1895.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSE A. STAUFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mo- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Snow-Plow, Excavator, and Sweeper; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined snowplow, excavator, and sweeper.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily converted from a snow-plow into an excavator and which will in every case sweep clean the path or furrow made by the plow or excavator.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure '1 is a side view of my combined snow-plow, excavator, and sweeper, showing the machine in position to plow a furrow through the snow. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 a detail section, on line H H, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a two-wheeled truck having a tongue 1 secured thereto and projecting rearwardly therefrom. Pivoted by a king-bolt 2 to the truck is the bottom of the combined plow and excavator, one end of the bottom being in the shape of a shovel, while the other end is provided with a plow-point having the moldboards 3, which project upward from the bottom, and not only serve to throw the snow from the sides thereof when used as a plow, but also form a receptacle for the snow when the device is used as an excavator.
When it is desired to reverse the parts from the position shown in Fig. 1, thebody is turned upon the king-bolt, and will thus present its shovel end to the snow, which will scoop up the snow and deposit it between the sides of the moldboards. The horses are attached to the plow and push it forward, and in this way they will make for themselves a clear path in which to work.
Any suitable means may be employed for Serial No. 546,867. (No model.)
locking the body to the truck to prevent it from turning on its pivot while in operation. The means I have shown in the present instance consists of a bolt 4, projecting from the bottom of the body into a socket 5 of the axletree of the truck. Other means, however, may be provided without departing from the spirit of my invention. A rotary broom 6 is j ournaled in a depending bracket 7, secured to the tongue of the truck, and its axle is provided with a sprocket-wheel 9, secured on the axle of the truck by a sprocket-chain 10, and thereby receives its rotary motion.
The device is exceedingly simple, is composed of but few parts, and will effectively perform the functions for which it is designed, while, owing to its simplicity, it maybe manufactured and placed on the market at a comparatively-small cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination with a wheel truck, of
a combined snow plow and excavator pivoted thereto, said plow or excavator consisting of a bottom, one end of which is adapted to be used as a shovel and the opposite end of which is provided with diverging mold boards, which project from the sides-of the bottom and form a receptacle to retain the snow when the device is used as an excavator, and means for lockin g the body against rotary movement, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a wheel truck, of a combined snow plow and excavator pivoted thereto, said plow or excavator consisting of a bottom, one end of which is adapted to be used as a shovel and the opposite end of which is provided with diverging mold boards, which project from the sides of the bottom and form a receptacle to retain the snow when the device is used as an excavator, means for locking the body against rotary movement, and a rotary broom geared with the axle of the truck and located at the rear thereof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE A. STAUFFER. 'Witnesses:
GEO. A. TREES, Jim. B. MOISAAC.
