2 Sheets-Sheet 2. R. O. SCOTT. CAR COUPLING.
(No Mddel.)
Patented Nov. 26, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT C. SCOTT, OF KILGORE, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,296, dated November 26, 1895. Application filed June 4, 1894. $erial No. 513,395. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. Soorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kilgore, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oar-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side and sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top and sectional view, and Fig. 3 isa top view of the sliding block 0.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hollow rectangular draw-head, upon the top of which is pivoted the drop-lever B. WVithin the draw-head is a sliding block or trip O,having an elongated aperture 0 cut through it.
D represents the trigger pivotally secured to the draw-head and having its lower end projecting through the top of the draw-head into the aperture 0 in the sliding block 0. In said aperture is secured the spring d, operating against the end of the triggerD, as shown in the drawings. The upper end of the trigger passes through a suitable slot in the inner end of the drop-lever B, and is provided with a shoulder or offset 19, adapted to catch upon the edge of the lever and hold it'depressed, as shown in Fig. 1. To the outer end of the drop-lever B is pivotally secured the coupling-pin E, adapted to enter a suitable hole in the draw-head, so as to hold the coupling-link.
Two levers F are pivoted upon the bottom of the car, one on either side of the drawhead, with their outer or handle ends projecting beyond the sides of the car and having their inner ends projecting through suitable slots in the draw-head, so as to be in contact with the inner end of the sliding block 0.
In operating the invention, the coupling-link being held in the draw-head of one car and the coupling-pin of the other car being elevated'and held by means of the drop-lever and trigger, the cars are brought together, and the link pressing against the sliding block will release the trigger, allowing the pin to drop into its hole in the draw-head and prevent withdrawal of the link.
In order to uncouple the cars, the trigger D is drawn back, depressingthe inner end of the drop-lever until the latter is caught by the trigger, and the coupling-pin being thus withdrawn from the hole inthe draw-head the link may be pulled out. To uncouple from the side one of the levers F is moved, so as to push forward the sliding block, which will force back the upper end of the triggerand effect the release of the link, as above described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a car coupler, the combination of the hollow draw-head A, the drop lever B pivoted thereon, the pin E carried by said drop lever, the trigger D pivoted on the draw-head and engaging the drop lever, the sliding block 0 in the draw-head adapted to operate the trigger, and the levers F extending within the draw-head and engaging said block, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ROBERT C. SCOTT.
