Description
J. J. BARONET. BURIAL APPARATUS.
(No Model.)
Patented Nov; '19, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES JOSEPH BARONET, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF FIVE- SIXTHS TO ROBERT E. GERHARDT,'WILLIAM WV. VARNEY, AND JOHN KRONMILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
BU RIAL APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,153, dated November 19, 1895.
Application filed August 22, 1895. Serial No 560,130. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES JosErH BARO- NET, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore, State of Maryland,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in burial apparatus; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the same, all of which I will now proceed I 5 to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of one corner of the lid of a casket-box provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a casketbox in position in the grave, showing the lid partially lowered upon the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a grave, showing one end of the casket-box with the lid lowered upon the same; and Fig. 4 is a perspective of a casket-box lid provided with a modified form of my said invention.
Referring to said drawings, the letterA indicates the grave, B the casket-box, and O the lid thereof.
The lowering attachment consists of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form the hook D, the members of the wire then being bent downwardly, as at E, and said members then bent at right angles to each other, and
in the same plane forming the portions F and again bent downwardly to form the fingers G,
which engage the edges of the lid and project below the bottom of said lid and are adapted to engage the sides of the same. One of these attachments is secured to each corner of the lid. The lowering attachments are secured to the coffin-lid by staples H, or in any other desired manner.
The hooks D are arranged to leave a space between the lid and hooks for the insertion of the lowering-straps I. The hooks are also preferably bent downwardly at their outer ends to prevent the accidental displacement of the straps as the lid is being lowered. The
hooks at eachend of the lid are also parallel with each other.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of my invention, in which the lowering attachment consists of two independent pieces of wire K, secured to the top of the lid and bent to form the downwardly-projecting finger L and the loop portions M, arranged substantially opposite and parallel with each other. These wires are also secured to the lid by staples N, or in any other suitable or desired manner.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. The lowering straps are placed under the hooks or loops, and as the lid is lowered upon the box the fingers G center the same upon said box, as shown in Fig. 2. hen the lid is finally lowered, the fingers hold the lid in place upon the casket, as shown in Fig. 3, and prevent accidental displacement as the grave is being filled. WVhen the lid is in place, the lowering-straps can readily be removed.
Various other changes in the form of the hooks or loops for engaging the loweringstraps or in the form of the centering-fingers may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment for casket box lids, consisting of a strap engaging device secured to the upper surface of the lid and adapted to be engaged by the lowering strap, and provided with downwardly projecting centering fingers extending below the edges of said lid 8 5 and adapted to engage the outer surface of the sides of the box, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. An attachment for casket-box lids consisting of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form the hook D, having the portions F bent at right angles to each other and in the same plane, and the downwardly extending fingers G adapted when secured to the lid to extend below its lower surface, substan- 5 tially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES JOSEPH BARONET.
