SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,124, dated November 19, 1895. Application filed May 7,1894. Serial No. 510,273. (No model.)
To coZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itfknown that I, J OHANNES EHRCKE, joiner, of Schonebergmear Berlin,in the Kin gdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Windows Adapted to be Olosed in an Air-Tight Manner, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The primary object of my invention is to provide simple, efiective, and convenient means for making windows, and particularly sliding windows, air-tight when closed. To this end I, in accordance with my invention, provide novel means for mounting the sashes to slide in the jambs and for tightly closing the sashes between the jambs, as well as the joints between the meeting-rails of the sashes and between the end rails of the sashes and the ends of the window-frame.
I also include in my invention novel means for excluding dust, &c., from the window when partly or wholly opened and for raising and lowering the sashes.
In order that my invention may be clearly ascertained, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry my invention into practice, and then more particularly point out the invention in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
' in which the same parts are designated by like letters in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sliding window provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of one side of the same, parts being removed to disclose the construction. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 00 cc, Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of the movable jamb and the device for operating the same. Fig. 8 is a sectional plan view of the aforesaid window.
In the form of my inventionherein shown I have shown upper and lower sash-frames 'n. n, respectively, mounted to slide in a window-frame A. To efiectually seal the joints between the sashes n n and the jambs, I make, by preference, the jamb h on one side of the Window stationary, and the jamb h on the other side of the window to slide laterally in the frame A to and from the sashes, and I form 011 the face of said jambs h and h longitudinal ribs A, by preference, of the cross section of a saw-tooth, as shown, and I form the side rails of the sash-framesn n with correspondingly-longitudinal grooves B to fit and slide on the ribs A. I further form the movable jamb h with laterally-beveled cam projections g, as best shown in Figs. land 5, and laterally-beveled slots m in its face, and I mount at the side of said jamb avertically-sliding bar (1, provided with lateral1ybeveled slots f, cut through its back to engage the aforesaid cam projections g, and with laterally-beveled tongues Z to enter the slots m in the face of the jamb, and projections 11 to ride in slots in the cover D of the frame A and guide said bar din its movement. Thus by moving the cam-bar d vertically the bevveled faces of the slots ftherein will, through the cam projections g, cause the jamb h to be pressed tightly against the sides of the sashes and said sashes to be pressed tightly against the fixed jamb h, so as to tightly close the joints between said jambs and the sashes. For thus working the cam-bar d vertically I provide the same with a vertical slot 0, and I mount in the cover D of the frame over said cam-bar d a pivotal eccentric E, having a handle 2', which eccentric enters the slot 0, and when operated by the handle z'will operate the cam-bar d, as required.
To seal the joints between the meetingrails of the sashes n n, I provide said rails with reversely-facing angle-flanges H and I, respectively, which when the sashes are closed will interlock and bind the meetingrails together.
To seal the joints between the end rails of the sashes and the ends of the frame A, I provide, in connection with the lower rail of the lower sash only, as shown in Fig. 3, an angle-' flange J to enter a corresponding longitudi nal groove formed in the said lower rail when closed, as shown.
For excluding dust, 850., when the sash is open, I provide, as shown herein in connection with the upper sash only, a doublescreen or two screens L, of wire-gauze or other suitable material, attached to the forward and rear edges of the upper sash n and extending upward to a roller M, mounted and covered within the upper end of the window-frame, so that when the upper sash is lowered the too said double screen will be unrolled in accordance therewith and protect the opening of the window.
As a convenient means for rolling up said screen and thus closing the upper sash, which is or is not counterbalanced by weights in the usual manner, I wind 011 the end of said roller within the end of the frame a cord or wire 0 to be carried forward through an opening in the cover of said frame over a suitable guide and downward toafastening device P, whereby said screen and upper sash can be lowered and raised, as shown.
I have shown the sashes herein provided with horizontally-swinging sections 0 merely as an illustration of one. form of window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sliding window, the combination, with the sash frame, of a laterally sliding janlb having beveled lateral projections, and a vertically sliding jamb-operating bar having laterally .beveledslots out through its back to receive saidprojections and means for engaging the jamb-operating bar to actuate the same.
2. In a window, the combination with the sash frame, of a laterally sliding janib, having beveled lateral eain projections and latorally beveled slots in its face, and a vertically sliding jamb-operating bar having laterally beveledslots to receive said: cam proengaging the ja1nb-operating bar to actuate the same.
3. The (Z0ll1bl1lttl3lO1l,Wlllll the window frame, and its cover D the laterally sliding jalnb, and the vertically sliding jamb operating cam-bar, formed with a vertical slot, of a handled eccentric pivoted in the cover of said frame and entering said vertical slot.
4:. The combination, with the window frame and the upper sash working vertically therein, of a screen attached to the upper edge of the upper sash, a blind roller having an. end drum within the upper end of the frame on which roller the screen winds, at sash counterbalance connected to, said roller, and a cord winding .on thedrum von the end of said roller reversely to the screen, and leading outward through the frontlofi the frame, wherebyon drawing said cord the sash and the screen may be raised to any desired extent, substantially as set forth.
