Iin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in an automatic speed signal for electric and other cars, which can be adjusted so that it will automatically signal when a certain rate of speed has been reached or is being exceeded, and the invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. v Referring to the accompanying` drawings, in which the same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a verticalsectional view through the floor of 'a car, showing my invention mounted in operative position, part of the same being shown in section to better illustrate the construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
A indicates a stationary bearing bolted to the under side of the car oor or bottom, in the hollow lower part of which is vertically swiveled or mounted the upper end of a governor-post B, so that the same is free to revolve in said bearing. Below the bearing the upper end of the governor-post is formed with a bevel gear-wheel C, with which meshes a bevel-pinion D on the inner end of a short shaft E, mounted horizontally in a bracket F, which is bolted, as shown, to the bottom of the car. The outer end of this shaft is provided with a band-wheel Gr, around which passes a belt from the axle of the car, by which arrangement the governor-post B will be revolved according to the speed at which the car is running. The lower end of the governor-post is formed with the hollow head H, open or slotted at its opposite sides, and with the tube or vsleeve I extending down vertically from said head.

The interior of the depending governortube I is threaded, and within it is mounted the threaded stem of aregulator L, to the inner end of which is secured the lower end of a coiled tension-spring M, carrying a bearingcap N at its upper end between the pivoted inner ends of the governor-arms.
VO indicates a bell, which is secured by a post P t0 the bottom of the car in such position, as shown, that whenv the outer ends of the governor-arms rise into a horizontal position they will come incontact with this bell.
It will now be seen that the governor-post will be revolved while the car is inI motion, and as the speed of the car increases and the governor revolves with increased rapidity the outer ends of its arms J J will rise until they come in contact with the bell O, continuously ringing the same as the weighted outer ends ofv the arms alternately come in contact with it, and thus automatically signaling when a certain rate of speed has been reached or is being exceeded. As the arms rise their inner extremities come in contact with the cir cular cap N on the upper end of the adjustable spring M, which gives them a yielding spring bearing, and by turning the regulator L up or down the spring and cap can be raised or lowered to adjust the tension of the spring when the arm ends bear upon it and allow the governor-arms to reach and ring the signal-bell automatically at any desired speed,
as will bev readily understood. To lock the regulator at the point to which it is adjusted a jam or binding nut Q is used, which when the regulator-stem has been screwed up or down to the desired point is then screwed up on the outer end of said stem until it binds against the lower end of the governor-tube I, when it will serve to bind the governor-stem and prevent its being turned by the jarring of the car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim,` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. A speed signal for cars comprising a governor shaft connected with the car axle to be revolved thereby, governor arms carried by IOO said shaft and pivotally mounted near their inner ends, a tension spring arranged to be acted upon by said inner ends, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring, and a bell arranged to be struck by the outer ends of the governor arms when the latter have risen to a certain plane; substantially as set forth. i
2. A speed signal forcars comprisinga governor shaft connected with the car axle to be revolved thereby and formed with the open head, the governor arms pivotally mounted in said governor head near their inner ends, the tension spring having a bearing cap at` its upper end on which the inner extremities of the pivoted arms act, and means for ad justing the tension of said spring, and the signal bell arranged as specified; substantially as set forth.

pivoted arms act, the regulator having the lower end of the tension spring secured to its upper end, and the signal bell arranged as specied; substantially as set forth.
4.-. The combination ofthe stationarybearing adapted to be bolted to the iloor of a car, the governor shaft pivotally secured `therein at its upper end and having the bevel gearwheel, the open head, and the threaded tube depending beneath the same, the shaft mounted in a horizontal bearing, having the bevel pinion at its inner end, and geared at its outer end with the ear axle, the governor arms pivotally mounted .in the governor head. near their inner ends, the tension spring ar ranged as set forth and having a bearing cap at its upper end on which the inner extremi ties oi' the pivoted arms act, `the regulator having the lower cndrof the tension spring secured to its upper end, and having the binding-nut, and the signalbcll arranged as specified, substantially asset forth.
