PRISM-POINTER FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,870, dated November 12, 1895.

T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER B. DYER, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Prism-Pointers for Type-Writers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a prism-pointer for type-writers; and it has for its objects, first, to provide a device which will be simple, durable, and economic, which will be noncrystallizing, there being no soldered parts capable of crystallizing by the vibration due I to the striking of the type-bars, and wherein,
furthermore, there will be no disagreeable clinking sound given out with each stroke of the type-keys second, to provide for the prisms of type-writers a pointer which will adjust itself automatically, in the use of which there will be absolutely no part liable to get out of order, and wherein it does not need the services of a mechanic to attach it to the type-writer, the front and inwardly-extending support or indicator serving as a guide for the eye direct to the point in the prism where the next letter will appear when struck; third, the construction of a prism-pointer for type-writers which will likewise serve as a rest or support for and assist in preventing the curling of the ribbon at the printing-point.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Wherever the word type-writer is used in this specification it is understood to mean the type-printing machine of the Remington or similar pattern.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the basket portion of the type-writer, illustrating the application of the improved prism-pointer. Fig. 2 is a section taken vertically and practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the prism-pointer removed from the type-writer, and Figs. 4 and 5 are fractional views of slightly-modified forms of the said Serial No. 552,898. (No model.)
l and 3 and it comprises a rear curved bar 10, which may be and preferably is made of stout wire, the ends whereof are bent upward, forming arms 11, and forwardly and inwardly extending portions constituting horizontal extensions 11 of the vertical arms. The prism-pointer can be made of one or more pieces of wire in the same shape by using a rubber band or bands in the rear at 10. By reason ofthe extensions 11 of the arms converging to a central point at which the circle of the back bar 10 is struck the back bar or member and the said extensions 11 virtually form the segment of a circle. Ordinarily each extension 11 of the arms 11 is made to terminate in an eye 12, and to each of said eyes one end of a spring 13 is secured, the other end of each spring being in similar manner attached to a link 14, and these links are made to converge at what may be termed their inner or forward ends, being pivotally connected with a yoke 15, also preferably made of a stout wire, having a forward and central extension 15. A third link 16 is pivotally connected with the extension of the yoke 15, and is furthermore connected with a spring 17, of any desired character, and said spring is also secured to a rearwardly-extending and horizontal arm 18, which forms a portion of a vertical arm 19, the latter arm being integral with or attached to a curved forward bar 20, which is of less length than the back bar 10. From later use of the prism-pointer it is found that links 14 can be extended to 5 connect the eyes 12 with the yoke 15, as in Fig. 1, without any intervening springs at 13, Fig. 3, the spring being placedon the guide 16, Fig. 3, frontwardly and near the link or hook 18, Fig. 3, or by replacing 10 and 11 with I00 a rubber- band parts 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 can be made of one piece of wire, thus doing away with springs entirely. The prime object of introducing a spiral spring or springs into the pointer is to keep the guide taut. The yoke 15, Fig. 1, can be made in the shape of a perfeet V and its ends extended to the eyes 12, Fig. 1, or extended to the arms 11, Fig.1, and, as above, connected at 10 with a rubber band; or instead of using rear wire 10 it can be replaced by using three of the curved forward bars 20, Fig. 1, at points 11, as well as in front. (See Fig. 4.)
In applying the invention the back bar 10 is placed over the back circular portion of the framing O surrounding the basket, and practically under the top fianging thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the yoke is so brought over the basket that the center of the space within the yoke will be at the center of the basket, or where the type-faces of the type-bars are brought up to produce an impression, and the forward bar is placed over the forward portion of the said framing, as is likewise shown in the said Figs. 1 and 2, the front link 16 and the extension or arm 18 of the front bar 20 being at the exact center of the basket and leading directly to the central portion of the yoke, so that by following the link 16 into the prism and arm 18 with the eye the eye is directed accurately to that portion of the prism at which the next letter to be struck will appear.
The springs introduced into the attachment will serve to accommodate it to various sizes of machines, and to keep the guide 16 taut various modifications may be made in the construetion of the attachment as, for example, the springs 13 at the rear (shown in Fig. 3) may be omitted, and the links 14, as shown in Fig. 1, be directly connected with the extensions 11 of the rear arms 11, and the said extensions 11 may be longer than shown in Fig. 3, as illustrated in Fig. 5. In Fig. at the extensions 11 of the said arms 11 when attached to the springs 13 are also shown somewhat lengthened, and the spring 17 may be made to connect the arm 18 directly with the yoke 15. The spring 17 and link 16 can be replaced with either a rubber band or a double strand of ,preferably,white thread,or both; but wire is generally used. To illustrate the use of rubber bands in this connection I have shown in Fig. 6 such a band 10 as it would appear when stretched around the circular rear portion of the framing C in place of the wire 10, with its ends 11" correspondin in position to the ends 11 of said wire, and through the said ends is passed a second rubber band 15, which has its ends connected by a guidestring 16, which in turn is connected to the link or hook 1S. (Shown in Fig. 3.) The band 15 will form a triangle which corresponds to the yoke 15.
The type-writer ribbon G, carrying the ink, is passed over the attachment, whereby said attachment virtually forms a support for said ribbon at that point where it is to be struck by the type and tends to prevent its curling at the moment of its being used.
The invention is not limited to bein made of wire, but covers the use of three rubber bands stretched in the manner shown in Fi 1 and E3, or of two rubber bands with a strand of white thread as a guide, or of guttapercha or celluloid, or cut out of any flat metal of sufficient lightness for said purpose and held in the manner shown, or at two points, (front and back.)
The pointer may be held. at two or more places on the circle holding the type-barhangers ,&c. of type-writers. No screws or clamps are needed in the attachment of the device, and there is nothing to hinder or obstruct the type-writer carriage or interfere with the movement, while the device is durable, serviceable, and light.

A prism pointer for type writing machines, adapted to cross the basket portion of the frame under the ribbon and comprising a body portion to engage the rear of the frame, a yoke forming the center of the pointer, a straight guide portion proceeding from the yoke and having means for connecting its outer end to the frame opposite to where it is engaged by the body portion, certain portions of the device being yielding or elastic to allow of the yoke being properly centered, substantially as described.
2. A prism pointer for type writers, the same consisting of a rear section adapted for connection with the rear portion of the basket or frame surrounding the same, being connected with a yoke adapted to be located over the center of the basket, and a forwardly extending member located over the forward central portion of the said basket and leading to the central portion of the said yoke, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A prism pointer for type writers, the same consisting of a body section adapted for connection with the rear portion of the type writer basket or frame surrounding the same and terminating at its forward end in a yoke centering the said body section, and an indicating member leading from the center of the said yoke to the forward portion of the type writer basket or its frame, as and for the purpose specified.
4. A prism pointer for type writers, the same consisting of a rear bar adapted to clamp around the upper portion of the rear type bar hanger-frame, having side members converging at their inner ends and a yoke connected with the said side members, and an indicating 01' pointing member connected with the central portion of the yoke and adapted for at tachment to the forward central portion of th upper supports for the type bars, the tyln writing ribbon being adapted to pass over 1 t central portion of the said attaelnnent,wht:

5. The combinatiomwith the basket or type frame of a type Writer and the ribbon thereof, of-a prism pointer, the same consisting of a rear bar adapted for attachment to the said basket or type frame, provided With converging side members connected at their inner IO ends to a yoke, and a yielding indicating member leading from the said yoke in a forwardly direction, being fitted for attachment to the forward central portion of the said type frame of the type Writer, as and for the purpose specified.
