Description

STATES.
PATENT SAMUEL WHITE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
iMPROvl-:D'SHADE-HOOK.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WHITE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shade-Hook; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part Ot' this specification, in which- Figure I is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view, the screw-rod being cut Oft' on the line w x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention is designed for holding and keeping taut the cord whichis used for drawing up window-shades.
My invention consists in the employment of a suitable screw-socket carryin g a screw or the like for enabling it to be secured to the frame of awindow, and a screw-rod which passes through said socket, which has a hook upon one end, and is provided, as regards the other, with a nut, by which the rod can be thrown up or let down for loosening or tightening the cord, as occasion may require.l
A designates the socket, and this may be of any appropriate form. In the present instance it is spherical, having a neck, a, terminating in a plate-like portion, b, with a flat face, which, when the device is applied, rests against the frame of the window. A screw, o, projects out from the face Of the plate for securing the device to the window-frame.
Bis the screw-rod which passes through the spherical'portion of the socket A, and is Operated by a nut, d, upon its lower end, which works upon the screw. The upper end, of the screw-rod is in the form ot' a hook, c, and this is caught over the cord employed for raising a roller-curtain, as shown in Fig. 1. The screwrod has squared sides, the screw-thread for the uut to work on being cnt on the corners. This rod passes through a square socket, which, of course, has squared sides, and it cannot therefore revolve, as might Occur were it round; and it can be moved up or down in the socket without difficulty.
It is well known that the cords employed for raising rollercurtains after awhile become slack, and the commonest of the devices used for tightening them so that they will operate properly is a slide working in a toothed rack which is secured to the window-frame, the cord being thrown over a button connected to the said slide. The tension Of the cord is regulated by adjusting the slide to thedevised tooth on the rack. These racks'are not as efficient as they should be in very many respects.
Now, it will be observed by my device the tension of the cord may be regulated by merely turning the nut d. The device is at Once simple', and provides a greater length for the screwrod for tightening the cord when it has become quite strained. This cannot be done with the device alluded to in so great a degree with- Out making the rack so long as to be unsightly, or by taking it Off and securing it again lower down on the window-frame, or putting on a new cord.
My device is simple, and will accomplish all that is required of it, and it is susceptible of being made as ornamental as desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the socket A, screw-rod B, and nut d, the same constituting an improved device t'or holding and regulatingthe tension oi' the cords used for raising w1ndowshades.
