CUSPIDOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,543, dated November 12, 1895.

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. STAEHLIN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cuspidors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a cuspidor cleansed by the action of water flushes into and through it from a supply-pipe, whereby the cuspidor is kept constantly cleansed and the obnoxious features of such a piece of furniture are avoided, the article always having a presentable appearance; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. II is a top view, in which one-half of the funnel-plate is cut away to show the spit-box beneath and a portion of the flushing-rim is broken away to show the interior of the rim and the entrance of the water-supply pipe.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents 'the cuspidor-vessel, to the bottom of which is connected a nipple 2, the nipplerin turn being designed to be connected to a waste-pipe, into which the refuse is flushed` from the cuspidor on the admission of water through a supply-pipe 3, controlled by a valve 4, the object of having the nipple project up into the vessel being to form a water seal to the waste-pipe.

The vessel l has formed at its top a hollow rim 5, provided in its inner face with a slot G for the escape of water as it iiows into the rim from the supply-pipe, which pipe leads directly into said rim.

7 is a funnel-plate seated in the upper end of the vesselrl, beneath the rim and its slot, in the center of which plate is an opening v8, through which the. water passes after iiowing over the plate and falls into the spit-box, the funnel-plate bein g thoroughly cleansed by the action of the water passing over it.

9 is a spit-box supported on a rib within the vessel. The spit-box has a raised central portion l0, that extends over the top of the nipple 2, so that the box does not come in contact with said nipple, and as the water in falling through the opening 8 of the funnelplate washes over this raised portion it keeps it always thoroughly cleansed, thereby giving a clean insight into the cuspidor through the opening 8 down into the box. The spitbox is provided with a number of vertical slots 12, extending from the bottom of the box to a point on its side for the exit of the water out into the lower portion of the vessel l, and from thence through the nipple 2 into the waste-pipe connection, these slots preferably being made narrow enough, so that they will not admit of refuse-such as matches, cigar ends, bc-passing through them into the waste-pipe to clog said pipe.

The funnel-plate 7 and the raised portion ofthe spit-box are preferably enameled, or of some other form of smooth surface that is readily'cleansed by the action of water flowing over it.

I claim as my inventionl. In a cuspidor, the combination of the cuspidor vessel having a hollow rim, an opening from the interior of said rim, a water supply connection, a funnel plate, a spit box beneath said funnel plate, and openings from said spit box leading to the lower portion of the vessel; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
