To ctZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HUGH MELLON, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Laths, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a form of wooden lath for retaining plastering; and the object and purpose of my invention is to make a lath which will hold the plastering without cracking, and which lath, when wet during the operation of plastering, will retain its place without warping.

Heretofore sheathing-boards have been produced with dovetail grooves in their plasterling-receiving surfaces, but as the forming of the dovetail grooves removed so much wood from one side of the lath when the latter was wet by the plastering there was developed in the lath a tendency to curl up at the edges, which caused the plastering to crack. To obviate these difficulties and to make a dovetail grooved lath serviceable, I form in the bottom of the grooves a slit or slot between the nailing places, and this prevents the lath from curling up at the edges and holds the plaster without cracking.

Accompanying this specification, to form a part of it, there is a plate of drawings containing four gures illustrating my invention with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them.

Of these illustrations, Figure l is a top view of one of my improved laths. Fig. 2 is a crossseetion taken on the line a; of Fig. l. Fig. i ,3 shows a section of my improved lath with plastering applied thereto, and Fig. 4 is a perspeotive of one of my improved laths.

The several parts of the lath thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter L designates the lath made with dovetail grooves D in its plaster-receiving face F. These grooves are made throughout its length. Y f

The letter S designates slots or slits made in the bottom of the grooves D between the nailing places N, and these slots pass through the lath.

The letter CZ designates part of a stud to which the latlis are nailed, and P the plastering applied thereto.

With the laths as thus made and applied, when they are wet during the operation of plastering, they retain their position, they hold the mortar firmly, and the latter does not crack in drying.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-,

A lath having dove-tail grooves made lengthwise throughout its mortar receiving face, and slots or slits made in the bottom of each of the grooves between the nailing places, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
