SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,859, dated October 31, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SQUIRE TONEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Viroqua, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin,have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Laths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

and to letters of reference marked thereon,

which form a part of this specification.

This invention is designed more especially as an improvement upon the patent issued to me November 29, 1892, No. 487,166.

The present invention consists in providing a lath or sheathing both surfaces of which are beveled or inclined toward the center, said lath also having a longitudinal channel or recess with straight walls, which are par allel with each otherand at right angles with the base of the recess, so that when the lath is nailed in place both-sides or faces of the lath will be on a straight line, laterally, and

the walls of the channel inclined inwardly to form a dovetailed recess.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a lath made in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the lath applied.

A designates the lath or sheathing strip, which is of a suitable width,and is provided at one edge with a recess (1 adjacent to which the straight edge of the adjoining lath or sheathing will lie. The back of the lath or sheathing strip is inclined from eachedge in toward the center,or concaved, and the other side, or front of the strip, is inclined from each edge out toward the center, or is convex, which construction provides a lath of equal thickness throughout. At the center of the convex side of the'lath, or at intervals, is cut a channel or groove, 1), having parallel sides. When the lath or sheathing is nailed to the studding both sides of the same will be brought straight laterally and the sides of the longitudinal channel or recess will be caused to incline toward each other, thus forming a dovetail recess which will hold the plaster in place. By means of this improvement less plaster is required than with a lath constructed as shown in the patent hereinbefore referred to, as there will not be a concave recess in the face of the lath when it is applied.

I claim- 1. A lath or sheathing having parallel front and rear sides, both of which are inclined from edge to center, and a channel or recess in its face with parallel side walls, substantially as shown, whereby when the lath is nailed in place it will be bent to provide a dovetail channel or recess, for the purpose set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a plastering strip or lath having a concave back and .a convex face, and a channel, or channels, formed in the convex face, substantially as'shown.

3. Alath or plastering strip of equal thickness having the front and rear sides oppositely inclined from its longitudinal center, and having a recess or channel the side walls of which are parallel, substantially as shown.

4:. Alath or plastering strip having a body portion of equal thickness which inclines from the edges to the center and a recess with parallel side walls forthe purpose set forth, said recess reducing the thickness of the lath so that it will bend at the base of the recess and incline the side walls thereof, substantially as shown.

5. A lath or sheathing having parallel front and rear sides both of which are inclined from edge to center, and a channel or channels in one side with parallel side walls, one edge of the strip having a groove or recess, as a, for the purpose set forth.

6. Alath 0r plastering strip having a body portion of equal thickness which inclines from the edges and a recess with parallel side walls, so that when applied for use the inclined side walls of the lath will be brought to a straight line and cause the side walls of the recess to incline, the change of inclination of the lath occurring at the portion of the lath forming the base of the recess.
