SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.1548,534, dated October 22,1895. Application tiled July 5, 1895. Serial No. 555,018. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES D. FOSTER and JOHN L. Bison, citizens of the United States, residingat Huntsville, in the county of Madi- -son and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery-Cabinets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in fthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in store-furniture articles of that class known as delivery bins or cabinets, designed more especially for the purpose of storing and delivering powder and shot, although the cab net may be used for fstoring other substances than those herein mentioned.
The objects that we have in view are, iirst, to provide asimple and inexpensive cabinet in which quantities of different substances can be stored until it is desired to withdraw a part or the whole of certain of the contents in any one of the compartments; second, to provide convenient means for conveying the substance from any one of the compartments to a central spout for directing the substance into a scale-pan; third, to provide a simple valve or gate mechanism for each compartment of the cabinet, and, finally, to providea locking contrivance adapted to lock all the valves of the series of compartments when the valves are closed.
With these ends in view our invention consists in the combination of devices, and in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. 4
To enable others to understand our invention we have illustrated the preferred embodiment of our cabinetin the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifi-` thereof on the plane indicated by the dotted line fc fr of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail perspec tivcview of one of the valves and its operating-stem. Fig. 1i is a det-ail Vview of the lockingbar.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings, rei ierring to which- A designates the inclosing shell or casing of the cabinet. We prefer to make this casing of substantially rectangular shape, and to mount it upon the legs a, although the shape and the way of supporting the cabinet are not material and may be varied at pleasure. This case A'is divided into a series of compartments B C by means of the transverse partitions b b, and each compartment has a sloping false bottom c, which inclines downward toward and below a discharge-port CZ, provided in the solid front rail a of the cabinet.` l/Ve prefer to provide a glass front e to the series of compartments to enable the storekeeper to readily ascertain the quantity of powder and shot or other substances contained in the compartments of the cabinet;
but the use of this glass front e is optional line with the'port d from the central com-- partment C; but it is evident that a single continuous strip may be used with an opening or recess to coincide with the port of the com partizioni;V C.
G H designate the sloping conveyer troughs or chutes, and I is the central spout by which the contents of the several compartments B C may be conveniently discharged into a scalepan or other receptacle. These chutes'and the spout are suitably secured to thefront rail a of the cabinet below the series of ports d from the compartments, and we prefer to arrange the spout I below lthe central compartment C, while the chutes G H areV below the side compartments B B. The chutes are closed at their outer ends at the sides of the cabinet, and said chutes are inclined or arranged in sloping positions from the sides of are arranged to close the ports d to the com-` partments B and are provided with vertit cally-disposed operating-stems j, while the valve K is arranged `to close the port to the central compartment C and it has a horizontal operating-stem 7c.
V In the cabinet shown and herein described as an embodiment of our invention we intend to use the central compartment O for the storage of powder, while the side compartments B are for storing shot of different sizes. Hence we arrangethe stem for the valve of the powder-compartment C in a different position from the valve-stems of the side compartments, so that the storekeeper will not be so liable to make a mistake in vending powder for shot, or vice versa, as when all the stems are arranged in `the same positions. Each valve J has two lugs j j, one extending horizontally and the other vertically beyond the edge of the valve-plate, and through the lateral lug j is passed. the pivot-pin or screw that fastens the valve to the front rail a, while a pivot-pin passes through the vertil j to partially connect the valve and its stem together. These vertical valve-stems jare fitted and guided in notches Z, formed in the front overhanging edge of the top of the casing A, and they are held in place by a strip Z', fastened to the cabinet top over the notches l, the protruding ends of the valve-stems having suitable pull-pieces for their convenient manipulation. Each vertical stemj is provided with a notch m near its upper end, and into these notches are adapted to take the lips n on the horizontal locking-bar N. This locking-bar is fitted beneath the overhanging front edge of the top of the casing, audit has a series of longitudinal slots n', through which are passed the screws '17,, that serve to connect the locking-bar to the top of the casing iu a manner to permit said barto'have alimited sliding movement. Said locking-bar has a series of notches p cut in its outer edge, forming the shoulders or lips fn, and at one end this bar N has a suitable pull-'piece o for its convenient manipulation. The vertical stemsj of the valvesJare litted in thenotches p of the pull-bar, and whenA all of the valvestems are lowered to close the valves J across the ports d of the compartments B the bar N can be pulled out to force the lips n into the notches fm, thereby locking all the stems j and the valves J across the ports of, the side compartments.
It desired, each valve-stem j maybe pressed normally downward to keep the valve J closed across the port from the compartment B by means ot' the coiled spring Q, (shown by Fig. 1,) said spring having one end resting upon a pin, shoulder, or lug on the valvestem and its other end bearing against the over-hanging edge of the top of the cabinet or against the locking-rod N.
The valve K is pivoted at an intermediate point of its length to the front rail ct by the pin or screw la', and `the horizontal stem it of said valve is guidedin a suitable fixed keeper lo, the free end of the valve-stem having a suitable finger-piece, as shown.
It is intended that our cabinet shall be placed in a storecounter in convenient position to a scales, so that the contents of the compartments may be discharged directly into the scale-pan; but if it is not conven ient toso place the cabinet a flexible tube may be connected to the spout in order that the substance may be easily directed to the scales.
If the storekeeper desi-resl to sell a quan tity of powder, the stem 7c is pulled to raise the valve K and permit the powder to dow from the compartment C, through the port d, into the spout I, and thence tothe scale-pan, after which the stem 7o is shoved back to close `the port of said compartment C. To withdraw shot from either of the compartments B the rod N is forced in to release its shoulders n from the notched valve-stems, the proper valve-stem isl lifted to raise the valve, and the shot can now dow into the chute G or H, thence tothe spout I, and thence to the scale-pan, after which the valve stem is shoved down and the rod N pulled out to lock allot the vertical valve-stems.
It' desired, a suitable locking contrivance may be provided for the horizontal stem ,7c of the valve K.
Ve areaware4 that changesin the form and proportion of parts and in the details of con-V struction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of our invention can be made by a skilled mechanic without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of our invention; and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-A l. The combination of a casing having a series of isolated compartments and with vertical guides, a series of gates across the discharge ports from said compartments, the valve stems connected to the gates and titted in the vertical guides, and a locking rod slidably supported on the casing and having means adapted to engage with, or be disengaged from, the series of the valve stems, substantially as described.
III
. A delivery cabinet comprising a, casing ously and a horizontal stem connected to endivided into a. series of isolated compartments and having the discharge ports and the vertical guides, the central spout, the reverselyinclined chutes, arranged below the ports, to deliver to the spout, the pvoted gates, the vertical valve stems fitted in the Vertical guides and connected to certain of the gates, e locking rod common to all of said vertical stems and adapted to be engaged therewith, and to be disengaged therefrom, simultaneother of the series of gates, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our sgna- I5 tures in presence of two witnesses.
