SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,423, dated October 22, 1895.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, NVlLLIAM T. BECK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mexico, in the county of Juniata and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Anvils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective vise which can be readily attached to anvils when desired for use, and when not needed can be quickly removed, the same being adapted to be applied to anvils of ordinary construction.
The primary object of the vise is to hold a horseshoe during the operation of forming or sharpening the calks thereof.
In the drawingI have illustrated my invention by a perspective view.
A designates the anvil, which is of ordinary construction, the quarter thereof being provided with the usual hardy-holes.
B designates a pin, which is provided with a head or projection h, adapted to bear against the face of the anvil when the pin is placed in the hardy-hole, for the purpose hereinafter described. The upper part of the head of the pin is beveled, as shown, so as to provide clearance room for tools when the device is in use. To the lower part of the pin is pivotally connected a lever C by means oi' a removable pin c. The lever C carries a vertically-movable jaw D, the shank d of the jaw being pivotally connected to the lever and extending below the same, where it is apertured atd to receive one end of a helical spring E, the other end of said spring being attached to an eye or aperture c' in the lever. The lever is bent, as shown, and is provided on its end adjoining the bend with a jaw C', while the other end has an opening or eye c2, with which engages a depending bar F, the lower end of the bar being bent to form asuitable foot-rest.
To attach the vise to an anvil the pin B is placed in the hard y-hole, so that the projecting part of the head will be away from the jaws of the device. The lever is then connected to the lower part of the pin by means of the pivot-pin c. This will bring the jaw D against the side ofV the anvil, and it is held in movable engagement therewith by the spring E. The outer face of the jaw D is then at an inclination with the face of the anvil, the inclination being such as to properly hold the shoe to form the calks thereon. Now when the outer end of the lever is depressed the jaw C will be moved toward the jaw D, the working faces of the jaws coming to a position substantially Vparallel with each other, and the jaw D being raised so that the upper edge thereof will be on a level with the face of the anvil. If a horseshoe is placed between the jaws, the calk can be readily formed or sharpened, and there is ample space provided so that the tools used will not strike the head of the pin located in the hardy-hole. Vihen the foot pressure is released from the depending bar, the jaws will fall below the face of the anvil, such movement being caused by the spring E, the tendency of which is to force the jaw D against the anvil, as hereinbefore mentioned.
It will be noted that by reason of the parts being constructed as hereinbefore described the device can be attached to locate the jaws on either side of the anvil to suit either a right or left handed craftsman. It will also be noted that by the improved construction the inner jaw is moved to position on a line with the face of the anvil and the other jaw is moved toward the saine by asingle depression of the lever. It will be further noted that the device holds the shoe in proper position so that the calk is formed on the face of the anvil.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. AAn attachment for anvils consisting of a headed pin which is adapted to be placed in the hardy-hole of the anvil and depend below the projecting end of the same, a lever pivoted to the lower end of the depending IOO pin and having a jaw at one end, and a second jaw which is pivotally attached to the lever and also connected thereto hya spring, Substantially as shown and for the v'purpose set forth.
2. In combination with an anvil ot ordinary construction, of a headed pin which is placed in the hardy-hole and adapted to engage with the face of the anvil adjacent thereto and depend below the projecting portion opposite the horn, a lever pivoted to the pin and provided at one end with a jaw, a second jaw pivotally attached to the lever, and a helical spring connected to the second jaw below its fulcrnln and to the lever, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. ln combination with an anvil of ordinary construction, a pin which is adapted to be placed in the hardy-hole thereof, a lever pivoted to the pin said lever having a bent portion beyond which is a jaw,a second jaw pivoted vto the lever and held by spring pressure against one of the sides of the anvil, together with means for raising the 'end 'of the lever having the jaw, substantially as sh'own and described. e
4. In combination with an anvil, a pin, 'as B, of sufficient length vto extend through the anvil and engage a lever, a lever C which vis pivotedto the pin and bent on one side of its fnlcrnm to form a jaw, said lever carrying on the same side of its fulcrurn a second jaw, the latter jaw beingr pivotally attached to the lever and provided with a sprin, y the tendency of which is to throw the second jaw against the side of the anvil.
In combination with an anvil, of a pin B havingr a head the upper part of which is beveled, a lever C pivoted to the lower end of the pin and bent on one side of its fulcrum, the yend adjoining the bend being provided with a jaw O', a jaw D having an inclined face and an apertnred shank, a pin for con` necting the shank to the lever, a spring connected to the lower end of the shank and to the lever, the end of the lever opposite the `jaw havinga depending bar with a bent end for ldepressing the same, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
