Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLA M. HARRIS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
METAL-POLISHING COMPOUND.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,310, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed November 1,1894. Serial No. 527,641. (Specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLA M. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in a Metal-Polishing Compound; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, viz: hard-coa1 ash, cream of tartar, and alcohol mixed with hard water.
To prepare the compound proceed as follows: The coal-ash is first bolted 0r sifted and by repeated washings every particle of grit removed. It will be found that after washing and settling there will be three grades of this ash, the first grade on the top, the third grade on the bottom, and the second grade in the middle of the vessel. The first and third grades are unfit for use. The second grade is What I use, and in the form I z 5 use it it is a pasty substance.
To prepare five gallons of my compound,
take one and one-half gallons of this paste of hard-coal ash prepared as above, add two grains cream of tartar, one pint of alcohol,
and the balance of clear hard or well water. 0
Thoroughly mingle these ingredients by agitation and the compound is ready for use.
This compound is particularly adapted for the cleaning and polishing of silver, glassware, brass, copper, nickel, and all other sub- 3 5 stances taking on a highly-polished surface.
It is applied to the surface to be polished with a soft flannel rag, rubbed dry, and p0lished with chamois skin.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- 4o tors Patent of the United States, is
The herein describedmetal polishing compound, consisting of hard coal ash, cream of tartar, alcohol, and hard water, in the proportions stated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELLA M. HARRIS. Witnesses:
DENNIS L. ROGERS, GERsHoM POWERS.
