UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED H. CUTLER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
OFFICE-DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,114, dated October 1 5,1 895.
Application filecl October 6, 1891. Serial No. 407,971- (No model.)
To 0052 whom it may camera.-
Be it known that I, FRED H. CUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and usef Lil Improvement in Attachments for Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an attachment for drawers of desks and other articles of furniture; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have embodied my invention, and my said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claim.
In said drawings, Figure 1 representsa perspective view of a portion of a writing-desk, showing the drawers thereof provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a top plan of a drawer provided with my attachment, showing the arrangement illustrated in connection with the upper drawer in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar plan, showing the arrangement illustrated in connection with the lower drawer in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional View, showing partitions arranged at different angles and of different lengths.
My improved attachment consists of a pair bed-pieces a a, adapted to be placed on the bottom of a drawer and provided with a series of inclined partitions or shelves b b. The said bed-pieces form a base, and the partitions being rigidly secured thereto can be inserted together in the drawer or removed therefrom in the same manner at one time.
In the upper drawer B of the desk A,I have shown one of the said attachments placed at each side of the drawer, leaving an unoccupied space through the center. In the lower drawer B,I have shown a single attachment placed in the middle of the drawer adjacent to the back of the same, thereby leaving an open space at each side of the drawer and at the front. It will be observed that the attachments can be applied to almost any sized drawer.
The inclined partitions b bare placed in engagement with the bed pieces at difierent angles with respect to the bottom of the drawer, and they vary in length according to the angles, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus the longer partitions join the bed-pieces b b at a more acute angle than the shorter partitions. When the drawer is used for storing paper, the longer partitions will hold the longer sheets and the shorter partitions will hold the shorter sheets, keeping them separate and distinct.
By the use of my attachment a Variety of articles may be kept in a single vdrawer separate from each other and easily accessible when wanted.
Books may be placed upon the different partitions and kept separate and accessible, instead of being piled up, as is ordinarily the case, and any one may be withdrawn without disturbing the others.
It is also obvious that the attachments may be made longer or shorter, broader or narrower, to suit the drawer which they are to occupy, if desired.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for the drawers of desks or other like articles, the said article consisting of a base formed of bed pieces and rigid inclined partitions secured infiexibly thereto, the said partitions being set a distance apart and each inclining upward from the base, the said partitions being shorter than the width of the drawerand the base being also narrower than the drawer whereby provision is made for ready access to the articles on the partitions and for the application of the attachment to drawers of different widths, substantially as described.
