MACHINE FOR CRIMPING LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 54:7, dated January 9,. 1838.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUoIUs UPHAM, of Putney, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Crimping Boot- Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
Take a common crimp now in use and cut out the bark edge about five inches above the head to the same distance on the foot let in siX blocks two on the leg, two on the foot, and two on the heel between them, about three inches long each, two blocks are the same thickness of the bark edge of the crimp the heel blocks form an angle of about forty five degrees with the foot and leg blocks see (drawings marked l, 2, 3, &c.) each block has a screw, A, through it by which to extend the block from the main part of the crimp, each pair of blocks is coupled together with two staples B, on which the blocks move, in the operation of crimping a boot leg the leather is tacked to the blocks and the back edge of the crimp; the screws are marked A, and the staples B, in the drawings; the above in connection with the common boot crimp is my improvement; I do not claim the application of the screw to the boot crimp but what I claim as my invention is- The siX blocks connected byv staples and moved by screws in the manner before described to move independently of each other or. simultaneously as the leather may require.
